Position primary purpose and general responsibilities:

Perform survival surgical procedures in rodents under general anesthesia using sterile technique. Perform post-operative monitoring, post-operative care and record keeping in compliance with Federal and State guidelines and requirements. Perform data analysis on complex data sets using statistical analysis software. Assist in preparation of test compound reports for sponsors. Assist supervisory personnel with study management, training and compliance.

Core responsibilities:

% Time Spent 80%

Responsibility statement: Survival procedure surgeon

Duties: Perform intravenous catheterization surgeries on experimental rodents using sterile technique with a high success rate. Recover experimental rodents from anesthesia. Perform post-operative assessment and care. Perform surgical and post-operative record keeping in accordance with Federal, State and VCU guidelines.

% Time Spent 10%

Responsibility statement: Technical report preparation

Duties: Assist the project Principal and Co-investigator in collation of study data. Assess accuracy of raw data and perform preliminary statistical analysis. Assist in preliminary report formatting and preparation.

% Time Spent 10%

Responsibility statement: Study management, personnel training and study oversight

Duties: Serve as a surrogate for the Principal Investigator, Co-investigator or Research Coordinator when those individuals are unavailable by making critical decisions pertaining to ongoing experimental protocols. Train new employees in laboratory procedures and techniques.

Minimum hiring standards:

Previous experience with laboratory animals. Prior experience conducting survival surgical procedures in rodents. Prior experience with data analysis and preparation of technical reports. Ability to communicate with co-workers and supervisor; ability to work as part of a team and adapt to unexpected changes in experimental protocols.

Preferred hiring standards:

Preferred is a master’s degree in a bioscience. Prior experience in laboratory personnel training.
