Position Summary:

We are seeking a chaplain to provide on-site spiritual care services in the VCU Medical Center, which is a Level One Trauma Center and a tertiary care hospital with many intensive care units treating a wide range of medical conditions. The PRN Chaplain will offer professional multi-faith sensitive spiritual and emotional care to the patients, families, and team members of the VCU Medical Center. The PRN chaplain is a member of the VCU Department of Patient Counseling and the VCU Health Department of Spiritual Care and serves on the interdisciplinary team with primary spiritual care responsibilities for patients and families in various clinical environments in VCU Health as assigned.

Duties typically include responding to traumas, codes, and other crises, providing spiritual carein a multi-faith context to patients, families and team members, being a support to patients and families at the end of life as well as to families suffering the loss of a loved one, assisting with advance directives, doing pre-operative visits, and being a caring and supportive presence to other team members. For a Board Certified Chaplain, there may be other duties as well. The hours scheduled may be a mix of days, evenings, overnights, and weekends, depending on our need and your availability.


Required Qualifications:

  • Completion of a Bachelors Degree (BA, BS) at an institution recognized by CHEA (Council on Higher Education Accreditation).
  • One or more units of Clinical Pastoral Education [certified by the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education, Inc. (ACPE), the National Association of Catholic Chaplains (NACC) or The Canadian Association for Spiritual Care/ Association Canadienne des Soins Spirituels (CASC/ACSS)].
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as an employee at VCU.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Board Certified, Provisionally Board Certified, or Board Eligible Chaplain by one of the following: Association of Professional Chaplains (APC); National Association of Catholic Chaplains (NACC); Neshama: Association of Jewish Chaplains (NAJC); or The Canadian Association for Spiritual Care/Association Canadienne des Soins Spirituels (CASC/ACSS).

Salary Range: $18-$25
