Mission or Goal of Unit:
The Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) School of Dentistry is located in downtown Richmond, Virginia. With a 127-year history, Virginia’s only dental school provides opportunities for selected, qualified individuals to study dentistry and oral health through a doctor of dental surgery (D.D.S) program, graduate specialty training programs and a dental hygiene program. The VCU School of Dentistry is one of a small number of dental schools in the country affiliated with an academic medical center, the only dental school in the Commonwealth, and the second oldest dental school in the U.S. It is one of five health sciences academic programs on the Medical College of Virginia (MCV) Campus of VCU.
Chief Purpose of this position:
Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) School of Dentistry is seeking applicants for a full-time teaching and research faculty position in the Department of Periodontics. This position will serve as the Periodontics Graduate Program Director for the School. The Graduate Program Director will participate in graduate didactic and clinical teaching, research, and service. The Graduate Program Director will supervise patient care, oversee residents' performance and progress and provide resident counseling on a regular basis.
Position Responsibilities:
Teaching:
Teaching across traditional department lines and in multidisciplinary teams is required. All faculty members in the School of Dentistry are expected to teach in an integrated curriculum system that includes baccalaureate, graduate, and professional education.
Research:
The Graduate Program Director is expected to support and participate in research and scholarship of students, residents, fellows, and the faculty as appropriate. A personal research focus is required for consideration of tenure/tenure-track eligibility at the rank of associate professor or full professor.
Service:
The Graduate Program Director is expected to represent the Department of Periodontics, the School of Dentistry, and Virginia Commonwealth University by serving on committees as requested. Participation and/or support of the department's participation in dentistry-related community service activities is encouraged.
Required Qualifications:
- Dental degree (DDS/DMD or equivalent)
- Certificate in Advanced Education in Periodontics from a program accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation
- Certification by the American Board of Periodontology
- Previous experience in an academic or military environment
- Eligibility for Virginia Dental licensure
- Experience in treatment planning, site preparation and placement of dental implants
- Demonstrate experience with development activities to include interacting with alumni and former donors and seeking out opportunities for financial support through grants and sponsorships or a commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU
- Demonstrate the ability to adapt to change and embrace modern technology
- Demonstrate experience working in a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU
- Demonstrate the ability to contribute to and participate in a humanistic environment of learning
- Demonstrate the ability, or acquire and develop such ability to incorporate adult learning theory, evidence-based oral health care, innovation in student learning, and critical thinking
- Demonstrate a well-developed scholarly/research portfolio with evidence of multidisciplinary applications (for applicant seeking tenure-eligible status)
- Advanced degree (MS, MSD or PhD)
- Education and/or experience with digital scanning and 3-D printing, laser technology, and multiple implant systems used in periodontal practice
