Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) announces a nationwide search to recruit the next Dean of the School of Medicine and Executive Vice President Medical Affairs, VCU Health System.



The mission of the VCU School of Medicine is to provide preeminent education to physicians and scientists in order to improve the quality of health care for humanity. Research is an important component of the School’s mission and accounts for half of VCU’s sponsored research. The School of Medicine is internationally recognized for patient care and education. VCU School of Medicine comprises 18 clinical departments, eight basic health science departments, and 11 affiliated institutes and centers. These collectively provide exceptional research and education opportunities for physicians and scientists.

The Dean of the School of Medicine and Executive Vice President (EVP) of Medical Affairs, VCU Health System reports to the Senior Vice President for Health Sciences and is the chief academic and administrative officer for the School of Medicine. The Dean and EVP is expected to develop a strategic vision for the future of the School of Medicine. Among the responsibilities of the Dean and EVP will be to elevate the School’s distinguished research, clinical, and educational enterprise; recruit, hire, develop, and retain an exceptionally diverse, intellectually stimulating and inclusive faculty and staff; cultivate and strengthen relationships with key decision makers throughout the state; serve as a prominent voice and advocate for the Medical School; and maintain its financial stability. Virginia Commonwealth University is a major, urban public research university with nationally and internationally ranked sponsored research and educational programs. Located in downtown Richmond, VCU enrolls nearly 30,000 students in 238 degree and certificate programs in the arts, sciences, and humanities. Twenty-three of the programs are unique in Virginia, many of them crossing the disciplines of VCU’s 11 schools and three colleges. The VCU Health brand represents the VCU health sciences academic programs, the VCU Massey Cancer Center and the VCU Health System, which comprises VCU Medical Center (the only academic medical center in the region), Community Memorial Hospital, Tappahannock Hospital, Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU, and MCV Physicians.
