Job Details

Job Summary Purdue University’s Department of Philosophy is seeking to hire a philosopher with expertise in the philosophical dimensions of artificial intelligence.  This advertisement is for a tenure-track academic year appointment at the assistant professor level.  AOS: Open, but AI must play a central role in the candidate’s research program.  AOC: Philosophy of computing and information.

Principal Duties: Purdue is a member of the American Association of Universities, and thus a strong research profile is expected of the successful candidate in addition to graduate mentoring and effective teaching.  Teaching load is 4 courses/year (2/semester), undergraduate and graduate, including two courses per year in the College of Liberal Arts’ Cornerstone Integrated Liberal Arts first-year curriculum (SCLA 101 or SCLA 102).  This curriculum is highly flexible but emphasizes student engagement with primary texts in philosophy, literature, and history.  The successful candidate will also be expected to take a leading role in the department’s new Bachelor of Arts degree in Artificial Intelligence.

Qualifications: Ph.D. in philosophy or related field required prior to appointment.

The College

The College of Liberal Arts at Purdue University is embarking upon 45 faculty searches for positions beginning in Fall 2023.  These positions will advance research within and across disciplines, and intersect with technology, data science, and engineering in relevant and important ways.  These positions include teaching in our innovative, nationally-recognized Cornerstone Integrated Liberal Arts Program that educates students across the university.

Application Procedure
To apply, please visit careers.purdue.edu Req #22204 Applications must include: i) a cover letter, (ii) a curriculum vitae, including the names, email addresses, and institutional affiliations of at least three references, (iii) a research statement (including any plans to secure external research funds), (iv) a teaching statement (including any qualifications to participate in the department’s BA in AI program), (v) a writing sample, and (vi) copies of graduate transcripts.  Cover letters should, if possible, speak to the candidate’s ability to work with other units on campus, especially the Department of Computer Science.  Letters of reference should not be included in the initial application.  If letters are requested from the candidate at a later stage, they will need to be submitted within two weeks of being requested.  Instructions for how to submit letters will be communicated directly to the candidate.  As Purdue Philosophy is advertising multiple positions, please indicate clearly in your cover letter the position for which you are applying.  For additional information, contact the search committee chair, Dr. Paul Draper at pdraper@purdue.edu
