The Department of Modern and Classical Languages at the University of Houston invites applications for a tenure track position at the level of Assistant Professor in the language areas of Japanese, Korean, or Vietnamese. A strong commitment to excellence in teaching and research is required. Ideal candidate will have teaching experience at the university level. Native or near-native fluency in one of these languages and English is expected; intermediate proficiency in a second language of these three is desirable.

The successful candidate will have research expertise in one or more of the three language areas, complementing the current faculty of the department including in literature, cultural studies, diaspora studies, film studies, ethnographic studies, and linguistics. We welcome candidates interested in contributing to our interdisciplinary World Cultures and Literatures undergraduate and graduate programs. The candidate will teach language courses at all proficiency levels, and culture courses in the target or English language. The candidate is expected to assist the department chair in developing a Japanese, Korean, or Vietnamese program and will have the opportunity to oversee Asian language programs in the future. Qualifications :

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Japanese, Korean, or Vietnamese literature, culture, language pedagogy, or in a related field.

The department is seeking outstanding candidates with the potential for excellence in teaching, experience working with students from diverse backgrounds, and a demonstrated commitment to improving access to higher education for disadvantaged students.
