The African American Studies Department at the University of Houston invites applications for an Open Rank position in African American or African Diasporic studies in the humanities with a preference for an interdisciplinary scholar in health or environmental sciences. Secondary research areas may include medical humanities, race and environmental justice, intersections of science and race, minority health, or health disparities, including mental health disparities. Part of the mission of AAS is to make connections with local and/or national communities of African and diasporic peoples, therefore, preference will also be given to candidates with community-engaged experience and a track record of extramural funding. Applicants must hold the PhD or equivalent degree in African American Studies, a humanities field, a health-related, or equivalent by the time of appointment.

We seek a scholar with a strong promise of scholarly productivity, as well as experience with teaching and course design at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Candidates should be prepared to teach Introduction to African American Studies and upper-level courses. Rank and salary will be commensurate with the final candidate’s credentials and experience

In March 2021, the UH Department of African American Studies became a degree-granting department, with the mission of developing the knowledge of people of African descent in America and throughout the greater diaspora and the continent. With over 40 faculty affiliates across the campus who study African, African American, Caribbean, Latin American experiences, AAS is the center of Black intellectual studies at UH. This hire is one of two that is occurring this year and part of a cluster of hires that will take place over the next two years. We offer an undergraduate major, minor, and a graduate certificate. For full consideration, application materials must include a cover letter describing research agenda and teaching experience; curriculum vitae; 15-20 page copy of a recent publications in PDF or Word format; a statement of diversity contributions, and contact information for three letters of recommendation providers. Tenured candidates should provide teaching evaluation summaries from 3 recent courses and the 3 recommenders’ must be peers who can speak to the candidate’s quality of research publications.
