The Departments of Modern and Classical Languages (MCL) and Comparative Cultural Studies (CCS) in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences at the University of Houston seek to hire a scholar of Jewish Studies at the rank of Assistant Professor. The position will be be housed jointly in the two departments with tenure will housed in the Department of Modern and Classical Languages and serving the Jewish Studies and Religious Studies curricular programs. In addition to the primary joint appointment in Jewish Studies and Religious Studies, their teaching may also contribute to programs in World Cultures and Literatures (WCL) and Women's, Gender & Sexuality Studies.

The successful candidate will be a scholar of Hebrew Bible and Gender Studies. The ideal candidate will have a strong publication record in Hebrew Bible and Second Temple literature, with expertise in feminist gender criticism and/or queer theory, in addition to having an excellent record in teaching and service at the university level. Advanced proficiency in at least one biblical language is required. Furthermore, they will play an instrumental role in re-envisioning the Jewish Studies program. We expect that the successful candidate will provide leadership and prospectively serve as the Director of the Jewish Studies program, including review of the degree requirements and curriculum, advising students, and advocating for the program with the wider non-academic community.

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in Jewish Studies of Religious Studies, or a closely related discipline or interdisciplinary field, or provide evidence of progress toward completion of the degree and confirmation that the Ph.D. will have been awarded by July 15, 2023. Qualifications :
  • Ph.D. in Jewish Studies or Religious Studies, or a closely related field, with a topical focus on Hebrew Bible, with a demonstrable thematic specialization in Gender Studies.
  • Scholarly record that warrants appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor.
  • Demonstrated excellence in scholarship and teaching.
  • A record of university service warranting an appointment with a prospective leadership role for the Jewish Studies.
  • Research and teaching interests that include Jewish Studies, Religious Studies, Gender Studies and World Cultures and Literature.
