Special Information

The Yuma Branch Campus of Northern Arizona University in Yuma, AZ is located on the grounds of Arizona Western College and serves a vital and growing local and regional community. NAU-Yuma has a primary role in providing a wide range of bachelor and graduate degrees in the Lower Colorado River region of Arizona and California with approximately 500 students on campus and an additional 1500 students engaged in distance learning programs.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering in the College of Engineering, Informatics, and Applied Sciences offers undergraduate and graduate degrees. These include a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering (ABET accredited), a PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering, a PhD program in Bioengineering, a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering, and a Master of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering. We also support an interdisciplinary Ph.D. degree in Engineering Sustainable Systems in collaboration with the School of Environment and Sustainability. The department currently has approximately 600 students and 15 faculty.

Job Description

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at Northern Arizona University invites applications for a non-tenure track Assistant Teaching Professor position. The candidate is expected to begin duties January 2023. This position will be located on the NAU-Yuma campus and will help establish and grow a new Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering program that will be offered on the Yuma campus. We welcome applications from teacher-scholars who are from populations historically underrepresented in the academy and/or who have experience working with diverse populations. We are seeking candidates who have program development experience as well as engineering design, solid mechanics, and advanced manufacturing backgrounds. The successful candidate will support the launch and growth of the mechanical engineering program at NAU-Yuma and teach undergraduate classes and laboratories in that program. The ideal candidate will be able to teach courses in both the solid and thermo-fluids areas, will have industry experience, and will be able to develop strong connections with our industry partners to secure industry sponsored capstone projects. Student mentoring and advising, participation in department-level service, as well as course and program level assessment activities for accreditation will be required.

Minimum Qualifications

PhD in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field conferred by date of appointment

Preferred Qualifications

• College-level experience teaching a variety of undergraduate mechanical engineering courses
• Primary expertise in engineering design, solid mechanics, advanced manufacturing and systems engineering
• Expertise in other Mechanical Engineering subspecialties, particularly thermo-fluids
• Experience with curriculum development
• Industry experience as a Mechanical Engineer.
• Demonstrated commitment to working in a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment
• Demonstrated commitment to teaching and working with first generation minority students
• Ability to communicate in Spanish

This position has been identified as a safety/security sensitive position. Therefore, per AZ Revised Statute, Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, employment history investigation, degree verification (in some cases) and fingerprinting. This is a Faculty (FAC) position. NAU offers an excellent benefit package including generous health, dental and vision insurance; participation in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) or the Optional Retirement Program (ORP); sick leave accruals and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified family members. More information on benefits at NAU is available at the NAU HR benefits page. Faculty are hired on a contract basis, renewable according to terms of the Conditions of Faculty Service. Employees offered a position will be eligible for state health plans (including NAU's BCBS Plan). Employees will have 31 days from date of hire to enroll in benefits, and their benefits will then be effective the first day of the pay period following their completed enrollment. If a new employee chooses the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) retirement option, participation in the ASRS Plan (and the long-term disability coverage that accompanies it) will begin on the first of the pay period following 183 days of employment. New employees who choose to participate in the Optional Retirement Plan (ORP; an alternative to the ASRS plan) will begin to participate on the first day of employment. The long-term disability plan that accompanies the ORP will begin on the first day of the pay period following 90 days of employment.
