General Description:

The Department of Music at Pacific Lutheran University invites applications for a tenure track, Assistant Professor of Music – Director of Orchestral Studies, beginning September 1, 2023. The PLU Department of Music is a nationally recognized center for musical learning, serving, and sharing. The Mary Baker Russell Music Center, with its exquisite Lagerquist Concert Hall and state-of-the-art rehearsal and learning facilities, is an architectural and aesthetic jewel carefully set amid majestic trees in the Pacific Northwest. The ideal candidate is an exceptional musician who demonstrates musical artistry and leadership, contributing to the cultural richness of the greater Seattle-Tacoma area, while fostering an inclusive learning environment that attracts and sustains a diverse population of students. Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct the University Symphony Orchestra (USO). Plan, rehearse, and conduct weekly rehearsals and performances of major concerts on campus; prepare and conduct ceremonial music for official University events (e.g., Spring Commencement); coordinate, manage, and host annual recruiting events (High School Orchestra Invitational, Honor Orchestra).
  • Teach additional coursework, assigned in accordance with the qualification of the applicant and the instructional needs of the department. Additional load assignments may include: (1) studio instruction; (2) courses in string music education; (3) other courses for the music major in areas such as theory, history, or aural skills; (4) pan-university courses.
  • In collaboration with the Director of Choral Studies, assist in planning and coordinating repertoire for annual Christmas concerts.
  • Actively recruit orchestral students and participate in department recruiting activities (e.g., department scholarship auditions).
  • Participate in College of Professional Studies and Department of Music faculty activities, as well as relevant service to the university.
  • Develop and advance visibility in orchestral music in the state and region.
  • Other duties as assigned based upon the appointee’s strengths and department needs.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Knowledge of a diverse, broad repertoire, and current research and techniques in orchestral music, conducting, rehearsal pedagogy, and related areas.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with, teach, and mentor diverse groups and/or diverse students.
  • Demonstrated artistry and competence in orchestral rehearsal and performance.
  • Demonstrated competence in teaching courses in orchestral rehearsal and repertoire.

Required Qualifications:

  • Terminal degree (DMA or PhD) in Orchestral Conducting, Pedagogy, or Instrumental Performance. ABD will be considered, but the degree must be in hand by September 1, 2023. Master’s degree plus relevant and justifiable professional experience and recognition may substitute for a terminal degree.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Terminal degree (DMA or PhD) in Orchestral Conducting, Pedagogy, or Instrumental Performance.
  • Prior teaching experience at the college level.
  • Piano proficiency.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diverse programming, in particular that of BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and/or women composers.
