We are seeking a Associate Director of Family Engagement who will be responsible for supporting the onboarding and ongoing experience of undergraduate student families at the Homewood Campus of The Johns Hopkins University. Working as part of the Student Transitions and Family Engagement team, under the supervision of the Executive Director, the Associate Director is responsible for the overall coordination, management, planning, administration, and evaluation of family engagement efforts.

This role is responsible for developing lasting relationships with families that strengthen university ties throughout the college experience and beyond, and serves as a dedicated and trusted resource for JHU parents and families. In developing engagement opportunities, the Associate Director considers and evaluates the diversity of backgrounds and experiences of families such as first generation-low income, under-represented minorities, international, athletes, etc.

The Associate Director of Family Engagement works with partners from across campus, both within and outside of University Student Services. In collaboration with other university offices and departments, the Associate Director provides families with the resources, information, and opportunities to support their students' learning, empower their students to take personal responsibility for social and academic choices, and understand their students' experiences at Johns Hopkins.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities


Program Development and Execution (50%)

  • Under the direction of the Executive Director, execute the strategic plan for long-term development of family engagement efforts.
  • Create, develop, and sustain the Blue Jay Family Ambassador program.
  • Organize, plan, and assess Family Weekend, an annual weekend where families are invited to campus to learn more about JHU and visit their student(s).
  • In partnership with Development and Alumni Relations, re-envision the summer onboarding events for families and students, by geographic region.
  • In conjunction with new student orientation, organize, plan, and execute move-in for all families, including those arriving for pre-orientation, athletics, international, and the primary day of new student move-in.
  • Serve as a knowledge expert and resource for both families and university units.
  • Maintains the highest level of service and professionalism. Participates in the campus and local community; attends institutional/public functions.
  • Learn and master online tools used for program organization and implementation, including Hopkins Groups, Asana, and Word Press.

Communications (40%)

  • Supports the transition and academic success of students by serving as the communication link between the university and families.
  • Develop and execute regular family communications for the academic year, including the promotion of campus resources.
  • Re-envision the Family Engagement website, with a focus on sharing communications and important resources for families.
  • Working closely with Admissions, ensure a smooth handoff of new families from the application to the matriculation moment.
  • Create a summer onboarding series of communications for new families, including not limited to, print, e-newsletters and webinars.
  • Answer and maintain the Blue Jay Families email inbox.

Assessment, Campus Involvement, & Giving (10%)

  • In partnership with the Office of Assessment and Analysis, conduct comprehensive assessment of all programs, services, and communications to ascertain achievement of learning objectives.
  • Participates in service opportunities during a variety of university-wide special events and activities, including but not limited to Hopkins Day, Alumni Weekend, Commencement, and Convocation.
  • Maintain the highest level of service and professionalism. Participate in the campus and local community; attend Admissions events.
  • Collaborates with Development and Alumni Relations in the identification of prospective parent donors, and in the stewardship of donor parents and families.


Special Skills, Knowledge & Abilities

  • Strong organizational, planning, and project management skills.
  • Excellent oral and written skills and ability to develop content for print publications, websites, and social media.
  • Track record of development and assessment of program curriculum.
  • Demonstrated understanding of and experience working with families of college students, including knowledge of FERPA and other applicable laws.
  • Familiarity with higher education student affairs services and programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced and highly collaborative environment.
  • Proven ability to work independently, adapt to changing priorities, and manage multiple tasks.
  • Commitment to inclusion and working with diverse populations.
  • Sound decision-making, judgment, and ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills.
  • Evening and weekend work required.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree required.
  • Five or more years of experience in higher education.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree preferred.
  • Five years of supervisory or management experience.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.
