About the Position
Working under the supervision of the Director of Counseling, the Associate Counselor in Student Equity and Success provides intake assessment, crisis intervention, and short-term individual, and couples, and group counseling to students who participate in SEAS programs. The Counselor works collaboratively with the Student Health and Counseling team, the SEAS team, and campus and community partners in a multidisciplinary approach to help students achieve and maintain optimum wellness.
The counselor designs and implements outreach programs and interventions and serves as a liaison to the SEAS programs. The counselor contributes to the overall training of campus staff through workshops and mentorship.
This is a temporary, part-time (0.80 time-base) position for one year, with the possibility of reappointment. The pre-licensed Associate in SEAS may potentially transition to a licensed Counselor in SEAS position at a higher salary, if an incumbent with positive evaluations successfully achieves licensure.
Responsibilities
Associate Counselors provide clinical services including intake assessment, crisis intervention, short-term individual, group, and couples therapy, and some case management. The Counselor in SEAS also provides outreach programs about mental health, training and consultation for SEAS staff, and debriefing and assistance during University crises as needed.
Required Qualifications
- Strong clinical skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills.
- Ability to provide time-limited individual counseling, couples
counseling, group counseling and crisis intervention.
- Ability to provide debriefing and assistance during
university-wide crises.
- Ability to make presentations to large and small groups on
campus, and design outreach programs for SEAS participants..
- Flexibility to work after hours or on weekends for occasional
outreach programs or crisis intervention.
- Demonstrated ability to connect and communicate effectively
with diverse student, faculty, and staff community.
- Must have completed an accredited master's level program in counseling, marriage and family therapy or social work.
- Must be registered with BBS with a valid Associate or Intern
number at time that position begins.
- Experience on multidisciplinary team of mental health
professionals and primary care clinicians within an integrated
center.
- Experience working in higher education, particularly first
generation students of color or affinity programs similar to SEAS,
strongly preferred.
- Experience facilitating both psychoeducational and
interpersonal process groups.
- Experience treating a wide variety of issues, including
substance abuse, relationship issues, depression, anxiety, sexual
assault, autism spectrum disorders, anger management, sexual
disorders, eating disorders, and/or domestic violence.
- Proficient in electronic scheduling and records
- Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication
skills.
Satisfactory completion of a background check (including LiveScan, as appropriate), that may include, but is not limited to: criminal records check, verification of academic credentials, licenses, certificates, credit history, professional references and/or verification of work history is required for employment. Cal State East Bay will issue a conditional offer of employment to the selected candidate, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Unsatisfactory results may also affect the continued employment of current Cal State East Bay employees who were conditionally offered the position.
All background checks are conducted through the university's third party vendor, Accurate. LiveScan is conducted through the University Police Department.
