The University of Tennessee, Knoxville and the Clarence Brown Theatre seek an Assistant Professor and Associate Artistic Director.  The successful candidate will be an active professional director, who has expertise in directing contemporary performance.  The ideal candidate will have worked in new play development and have some experience in at least one of the following areas: collaborative/devised theatre, digital/multimedia theatre, musical theatre, theatre for social change.  The successful candidate also will have a strong understanding of identity-conscious, culturally affirming, and inclusive teaching strategies, and a grasp of the changing needs of the evolving theatre.  

 

The faculty member will direct both professional and university productions for the Clarence Brown Theatre, a LORT D regional theatre located on the campus of the University of Tennessee. They also will act as associate artistic director for the Clarence Brown Theatre; teach Directing, Play Analysis, and other classes as needed in their area(s) of expertise; and mentor students and projects.  The faculty member will be expected to direct one show per year at the Clarence Brown Theatre and maintain an active artistic agenda in professional theatre.

 

Required: Completed terminal degree (MFA or PhD) or equivalent professional accomplishments, and a record of professional work.

The Department of Theatre at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville is an award-winning program, offering a BA and MFA with concentrations in acting or design (scenic, costume, lighting, and sound and media.). The academic program is fully integrated with the Clarence Brown Theatre, a professional theatre serving the cultural life of the region. We offer a supportive and collegial atmosphere in which theatre artists practice their craft while educating new generations of theatre-makers. Currently the University has approximately 25,000 undergraduate and over 6,000 graduate students.
