Overview

The purpose of the John H. Pace, Jr. ‘39 Center for Civic Engagement is to make service and civic engagement a central part of the Princeton student experience so that students can respond to the needs of the world in responsible ways. As articulated in its 2020-2025 Strategic Plan, the Pace Center's work is guided by a set of partnership principles, a commitment to anti-racism, and a student learning framework that centers equity, empathy, and empowerment. This work is rooted in the Center’s values of Engaged Discovery, Impactful Programs, Student Leadership and Community Focus.

Paramount to these values is the pursuit of partnerships and initiatives focused on community-identified goals and self-determination. The Assistant Director encourages, supports and invites diverse perspectives in a commitment to the Center's vision to have Princeton University students make the world more equitable by respecting differences and creating access and opportunity for all people and communities to thrive. They establish and maintain relationships and a presence in the community. They will actively seek and create the spaces and opportunities - both on and off campus - for students, faculty, and staff to come together with community stakeholders to increase understanding of each other's needs and assets. The assistant director will facilitate and support long-term and reciprocal relationships that are grounded in deliberation, informed by history, and committed to an anti-oppression framework that recognizes intersectionality, and actively avoids doing harm. They will ensure that the community’s voice and priorities are built into all partnerships learn and attain more effective and enduring results in our local communities, as well as stimulating wider, principled engagement by campus constituencies. The position reports to the Associate Director, Pace Center for Civic Engagement.



Responsibilities

Identification and Development of Community Partnerships (50%)

-Actively understand, collect, and elevate community priorities with students and Pace Center staff, as well as across campus as appropriate, with a focus on areas of opportunity for students and programs to engage that are in alignment with community-stated needs and priorities.

-Provide orientation, training and guidance to potential community partners for establishing relationships with the Pace Center and other campus units.

-Develop and maintain a process for partners to collaborate and develop new and expanded service opportunities in partnership with students and campus.

-Collect and share regular feedback from community partners and develop processes for partners to elevate concerns in real time.

-Identify and implement approaches to community partner engagement that reflect continuous and collaborative work with partners.

-Work with the associate director to collect and develop the tools and resources (such as community asset mapping) to empower campus collaborators to be successful and principled partners.

-Be informed on trends and best practices nationally.

-Serve as an advisor as needed across the Pace Center and campus to ensure principled engagement.

Community Connections & Collaborations (25%)

-Work in collaboration with the primary staff and student leadership engaged in the local community through the Pace Center and coordinate communications.

-Serve as the Pace Center representative on community based committees and commissions.

-Regularly attend community events, meetings, join existing associations, and host convenings as needed.

-Connect community partners to campus resources, faculty, staff and each other.

-Coordinate the Pace Center’s annual community partner gathering, which traditionally takes place in January.

-Connect and coordinate as possible with local higher education institutions working in the same communities.

Campus Connections & Collaborations (25%)

-Establish and maintain a list of available individuals and organizations in the community who can potentially serve as experienced advisors, speakers, and connectors to specific issues, topics and geographic areas.

-Participate in convening with campus units that regularly engage in the broader Mercer county community with the goal of increased collaboration and communication.

-Engage with the Community Partners-in-Residence.

-Participate in related Pace Center working groups and represent the Center on wider campus committees as assigned.



Qualifications

EssentialQualifications

-Bachelor's degree or equivalent.

-Five+ years work experience.

-Demonstrated experience in building relationships, working collaboratively with a variety of stakeholders, and forming and sustaining effective partnerships.

-Ability to manage multiple tracks of work and prioritize tasks accordingly.

-Experience collecting, analyzing and sharing usable quantitative and qualitative data.

-Experience planning events using resources effectively and efficiently.

-Experience working closely with communities that have been historically marginalized from the systems that affect their lives so as to always keep the lived experiences of people and communities at the center of our approach to service.

-Excellent communication skills, particularly in facilitating and presenting information.

-Ability to act as an inclusive leader to create environments of involvement, respect, connection and community.

-Ability to organize, plan and develop processes, and share and communicate those with others.

-Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team-based environment.

-Ability to regularly work evenings and weekends as required to be present at community events and meetings.
