Department Summary
The only comprehensive accredited journalism program in the Pacific Northwest, the School of Journalism and Communication (SOJC) offers majors in advertising, journalism, media studies, and public relations; Honors Program; and media studies minor; and supports UO's interdisciplinary cinema studies major and multimedia and Native American studies minors. The school offers Ph.D. and M.A. degrees in media studies and professional master's degrees in journalism, multimedia journalism and strategic communication. The school supports an innovative undergraduate curriculum in state-of-the-art facilities both in Eugene and Portland. SOJC is one of six professional schools at UO. The UO is a Research I member of the American Association of Universities.
The SOJC is a research and professional school serves approximately 2,500 undergraduates and 100 graduate students. The SOJC employs approximately 130 individuals as faculty and staff, over 50 graduate employees, as well as over 50 student employees. The school is one of the oldest journalism programs in the nation, founded in 1916.
Position Summary
The Project Manager for Outreach and Events is responsible for the leadership, management, coordination and implementation of SOJC sponsored events such as the annual SOJC commencement, Hall of Achievement, award ceremonies, Snowden events, Ruhl & Johnston lectures, Fall Media Day, faculty/staff retreats, hosted conferences, and select advancement events that advance the school's strategic priorities. This position reports to the SOJC Dean, and is responsible for coordinating these projects, events, and engagement strategies. Based on the vision and strategy set forth by the SOJC dean, this position is responsible for the conceptualization, design, budget, attendee management (list generation & registration), execution, and project management of events. This position supervises student employees and volunteers, assigning work and ensuring tasks are delegated appropriately to meet deadlines and project milestones. This position requires a high level of collaboration and communication and will regularly partner with the SOJC assistant dean of finance and operations, building coordinator, director of communication, assistant director of donor relations, outreach and events manager (SOJC Portland), and other relevant stakeholders.
The project manager works closely with campus departments such as scheduling, catering, communications, and facilities, as well as working with outside event support vendors and the general public. The project manager serves as part of the dean's leadership team in helping design and execute various projects—such as exhibitions and installations—internal and external outreach strategies, and the development of an overall strategic events plan for the SOJC. Success will require a person who is detail-oriented, assertive, and self-directed, and who possesses excellent organizational skills, and project management experience. This position must demonstrate sound judgment with measurable indicators of outreach and event outcomes.

Diplomacy and maintaining a high level of customer service standards is essential in this position. This position requires a flexible work schedule to include some evenings and weekends.
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree Journalism, Strategic Communications,
Advertising, Public Relations, Business/Marketing or a related
degree OR equivalent combination of education and relevant work
experience may substitute.
- Three years of experience in event management/coordination,
scheduling facilities, and/or planning and managing long-term
projects. Must Include:
o demonstrated experience managing project budgets
o progressively responsible leadership experience, including supervising staff, students, volunteers and related events staff

- Financial and budgetary skill with the ability to manage
multiple budgets and project annual spending

- Proficient with MS Office, spreadsheet and database management,

(e.g., Asana, Basecamp, Trello)
Preferred Qualifications
- Direct experience as a project manager with simultaneous
projects
- Demonstrated project management or event management experience
in higher education, public service, or non-profit / fundraising
environments
- PMP Certification or equivalent credential
- Familiarity with University of Oregon constituents, catering,
and conference services and facilities management
