ASSOCIATE DEAN FOR EDUCATIONAL AFFAIRS (SCHOOL OF MEDICINE)

Scope of Job:
Responsible for providing oversight, review, coordination and planning for the institution as it relates to all four years (including pre- clerkship and clerkship phases) of the undergraduate medical curriculum development and implementation, faculty selection and supervision, and educational administration ensuring quality and effectiveness throughout the academic mission.

Description of Duties:
  • Builds and maintains strong and collaborative relationships with faculty and leadership across the University and the School of Medicine, acting as a leader and strategic partner while engendering trust, exhibiting excellence, and affecting positive productive relationships.
  • Serves as a liaison developing strong working relationships with the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) and all accrediting bodies to ensure appropriate preparation for and passage of all accreditation reviews.
  • Establishes a vision that supports the mission and strategy of UTRGV School of Medicine, providing strategic and tactical leadership to ensure the School will be viewed nationally as a model in medical education.
  • Works collaboratively with the Central Curricular Authority Committee (CCAC) and the Assistant Deans, utilizing evaluation and assessment data from faculty and students to provide a framework in which to evaluate and mold the curriculum and make necessary strategic changes utilizing continuous quality improvement.
  • Integrates basic and clinical sciences across all phases of instruction to ensure both vertical and horizontal integration of the curriculum.
  • Works in collaboration with the Assistant Dean for Interprofessional Education (IPE) to integrate IPE into the curriculum design.
  • Works in collaboration with other UME offices, such as Student Affairs, to ensure student success and wellbeing.
  • Provides supervision and mentorship to assistant deans and director(s).
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Direct supervision of assigned staff.

Required Education:
MD/Ph.D, PhD, EdD or MD degree from an accredited university.

Licenses/Certifications:
If have M.D. degree, required to have unrestricted medical license to practice medicine in the State of Texas. Prefer board certification in a medical specialty if have M.D. degree.

Required Experience:
  • Five (5) years of progressive medical school academic leadership experience and in-depth understanding and knowledge of the LCME accreditation of undergraduate medical education programs and in particular the requirements and expectations of LCME.
  • Broad based experience in the science of learning and proficiency in pedagogical principles and application of education theory and research applicable to the design of courses and curricula in medical education.
  • Experience with technology-enhanced learning, distance education, and education across multiple geographically distributed campuses.
  • Solid record of accomplishment in the development, implementation, and oversight of medical education.

Working Conditions:
Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties. Office Environment; some travel and weekend work is required. UTRGV is a distributed institution, which requires presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Exerting up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.

Other:
Contemporary knowledge of medical education trends and expertise in curriculum design and pedagogical methods, particularly problem-based learning, self-directed learning, and team- based learning. Knowledge of and experience with population health, community-based models, integration of basic science and clinical, and interprofessional education.
