Communications Associate

The Communications Associate works as a part of the Global Engagement and Communications Office (GECO) to contribute to our external relations and communications campaigns, including our development, project communications and brand. The Communications Associate will manage key communications and marketing projects, providing catalytic and creative ideas, skillful construction of products, and thoughtful distribution to Jhpiego’s core audiences. The ideal candidate possesses a wide array of creative skills—a solid background in writing and storytelling, experience with developing social media content, an eye for design, an ability to construct multimedia digital communications products on platforms like WordPress, Mailchimp, Facebook and Instagram, and other skills that help us extend our brand through modern communications and marketing efforts. The candidate also should have experience in communicating the mission, success and resources of US government-funded global programs as well as plan strategic communications activities, including events. This position is perfect for lifelong learners who bring new ideas and new product types to the table regularly, and can take projects from idea to completion. Candidates with video editing experience are highly preferred.

Responsibilities:

  • Create concepts and build stories based on creative assets from our field teams.
  • Creatively deploy stories across a range of platforms, from websites to email to social media, with a focus on building unique, compelling content fully adapted to each individual platform
  • Contribute or lead key campaigns throughout the year—global health advocacy days, fundraising moments, and more.
  • Plan strategic communications activities for department or global programs;
  • Assist in social media posting, management and advertising
  • Generate and recommend original and creative approaches and content to communicate and promote our stories
  • Solicit content from across the organization that will enable our team to tell new, varied and compelling stories of Jhpiego’s success
  • Assist in the creative direction of campaigns, identifying, sourcing and utilizing the multimedia assets required to tell a compelling story.
  • Deploy paid advertising campaigns across Google and social products.
  • Update web page content and layout using a CMS such as WordPress
  • Support and provide training to staff on storytelling in the digital age
  • Support country and technical teams in achieving key communications milestones—including capacity-building
  • Provide quality assurance on creative deliverables
  • Represent the department and/or the organization at professional meetings and conferences, as appropriate
  • Work across the organization on multi-departmental teams to drive communications forward for Jhpiego’s strategic objectives
  • Demonstrate highest standard in quality of work, creativity and innovation
  • Video editing for multimedia projects


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in related field
  • Four years related experience
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
