The Facilities Operations Assistant 2 (Grounds) supervises and schedules the day-to-day work of the grounds crew in the absence of the Head Grounds Supervisor. Serves as the highest-ranking grounds position and serves as an immediate assistant to the Head Grounds Supervisor. Is responsible for leading and directing the work of grounds maintenance staff and overseeing assigned personnel.

Essential Functions:

Supervision:
  • Supervises and schedules the day-to-day work of the grounds crew, in the absence of Head Grounds Supervisor.
  • Supervises and participates in the work of a crew performing gardening, grounds maintenance, and building custodial work.
  • Responds, prioritizes, and schedules routine to urgent grounds maintenance service as requested.
  • Provides training to staff by demonstrating proper use of equipment and materials and the performance of specific tasks to meet quality standards.
  • Periodically spot-checks work to make sure instructions are followed, work is progressing according to schedule, and materials and equipment are being used properly.
  • Interviews and selects staff, establishes training standards, and trains new employees.
  • Evaluates work performance and recommends retention or termination of employees.

  • Maintenance:
  • Performs work related to the upkeep of the College grounds; mows turf using various grounds maintenance equipment.
  • Will use mechanized equipment, such as light construction equipment, trucks up to and including those mounted with wings for snow removal, tractors, forklifts, skid loaders, and hand and power tools.
  • Performs a variety of horticultural tasks including mowing, pruning, planting, and transplanting.
  • Mixes and applies pesticides and fertilizers.
  • Performs turf renovation by core aeriation certification and over seeding.
  • Removes damaged sod and installs new sod.
  • Cultivates and maintains planting beds, tree rings, etc.
  • Performs plowing, loading and hauling of snow from college grounds including roadways, parking facilities, walks and entry ways.
  • Loads and applies de-icing chemicals.
  • Hauls and moves materials, supplies, furnishings, and machinery.
  • Operates a variety of equipment such as but not limited to: snow blower, salt spreader, sod cutter, rototiller, zero turn mower, skid loader, chain saw, trimmers, sweeper, front end loader, backhoe, forklift, a variety of hand tools.
  • Operates a variety of equipment (including paint machines) to maintain artificial turf.
  • Services and maintains a wide variety of tools, machinery, and vehicles including oil change, lubrications, cylinders, blades, lights and tires.
  • May use a variety of shop equipment including grinder, compressed air tools, power washer, mechanical hand tools, etc.
  • Installs seasonal equipment. (Salters, plows, mowing decks, pesticide sprayers, water wheels).
  • Operation of tractors, trucks, motorized vehicles and other light equipment in all weather conditions.

  • Other:
  • Locates and removes refuse from college property; installs signs, performs traffic control duties.
  • Maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of motorized equipment.
  • Plans or assists in the planning of the staff, materials and equipment needed to accomplish the project.
  • Collaborates with campus personnel such as coaches, athletic personnel, and parking regarding special projects.


  • Professional Development:
  • Engages in appropriate professional development programs to remain current in the field and accurately advise employees.
  • Attends departmental meetings.
  • Serves on various committees, as needed.

  • Functional and Supervisory Relationships:

    The Facilities Operation Assistant 2 (Grounds) reports to The Head Ground Supervisor Grade 14. Under general supervision, performs work of moderate difficulty in the area of horticulture, snow removal, operation and maintenance of equipment, assists in grounds maintenance.

    Non-Essential Functions:

    Miscellaneous:
  • Approves requests for leave and signs timecards in the absence of the Head Grounds Supervisor.
  • Attends supervisory/grounds related training, certifications.
  • Supervise the grounds department inventory, including the requisitioning and proper distribution and control of equipment and supplies.
  • Assists with recycling.
  • Minimum Qualifications:
    Non-Competitive: one year of service as a Facility Operations Assistant 1 (Grounds)*; OR, two years of experience and/or training in grounds maintenance work*.

    *In addition, as determined by the State agency, this position is required have the appropriate license or certification to apply pesticides, herbicides, and other treatments. Selected candidate must have the required license / certificate.*
    Preferred Qualifications:
    • Associates Degree in Landscape Management, horticultural, sports turf management, arboriculture, business administration or related fields.
    • Experience in management and supervision of staff in substantial grounds operations.
    • Ability to effectively recognize and resolve conflicts and mediate disputes.
    • Ability to plan, organize and direct the work of others.
    • Ability to encourage and facilitate cooperation and teamwork.
      Work Schedule: 40 hrs/week; Monday - Friday, 6 am to 2:30pm Salary and Benefits: $37,507. May be benefits eligible; more information at Careers@Brockport. This position is not eligible for visa sponsorship.
