The Computer Science Department in the College of Integrated Science and Engineering (CISE) at James Madison University is seeking applicants for an Administrative and Professional Faculty position as Systems Administrator and Computing Lab Coordinator for the new Information Technology major. The successful candidate will be reporting administratively to the Academic Department Head and one of the system admins in the Computer Science Department.

The JMU CS department is a vibrant and supportive community with 24 full-time faculty members and approximately 700 undergraduate majors. Our labs and teaching spaces are designed for interactive learning and project work. We value faculty and students working together in the computing labs and our many active clubs and organizations including Women in Technology, Robotics, Forensics, Cyber Defense, and a student ACM chapter make use of lab and community areas.

Duties and Responsibilities:

As a member of the Computer Science Department and part of the new IT major, this individual will support all computer system use and applications for the new IT major, including student labs, and work with units across JMU. Overall responsibilities include Linux and VMware vSphere administration. The successful candidate will enforce lab safety policies and guidelines, track the IT labs inventory, identify, prioritize, and acquire IT lab’s supplies and equipment needs, image Dell and Apple desktops and laptops, work closely and collaborate with the CISE IT team, and the CS system admins as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Candidates must have a background in Linux server and desktop (such as Ubuntu/Mint/Debian) administration, scripting/automation, be a fast learner, and be willing to try new things and make them work.
  • Desired skills in the following areas: cloud administration, server and desktop virtualization (such as VMware and VirtualBox), desktop Linux support, network file systems (primarily NFS), networking and network security protocols (such as LDAP and Kerberos), multiplatform backups, and Dell/Equallogic iSCSI storage.
  • Experience with Digital logic equipment, TTL chips, breadboards, power supplies, and oscilloscopes is required.
  • Experience with VHDL, FPGA boards is a plus.
  • Candidates with demonstrable experience in these areas will be given top consideration. A demonstrated ability to provide exceptional customer service and support, and a capability to work within a multidisciplinary environment and to automate tasks is highly valued.
  • A bachelor’s degree in Information Technology (BS-IT) or Computer Science (with a specific focus on Computer Networking and Cyber Security), or equivalent degree is required, with a master’s degree or equivalent post-undergraduate experience a plus.
