Brief Summary of Work for this Position

The Assistant Director of the Upperman African American Cultural Center ( UAACC ) is responsible for the day-to-day coordination, curriculum development, program development and relationship development of Community & Pre-Student Outreach Initiatives in the Center. This position is critical for pre-student initiatives and the varying on-going projects/programs that are done in conjunction with the Wilmington surrounding communities. As well, the Assistant Director will be responsible for training work-study staff and managing one staff member, while also serving as the manager of the center’s assessment measures. In doing so, this will promote the Center’s educational and cultural enrichment objectives as they pertain to African-American life, culture and history.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Master’s degree in field relevant to the operation of the UAACC with a strong background in African American Studies and a minimum of two years of professional experience which can include operation of a cultural center/facility program, college level teaching or college level experience serving undergraduate students; At least one year of the professional experience should include working with diverse racial/ethnic people as well as historically under-represented groups.

  • Knowledge of African American, Black, Gullah-Geechee, and African histories/heritages and the intersections that.
  • Considerable knowledge and experience serving and supporting Queer African American Students and/or other Black students at a variety of intersections.
  • Experience working with college students in a university setting.
  • Demonstrated ability and strong interpersonal skills to work in a social justice-oriented office with individuals and groups with a wide array of backgrounds, identities, life experiences, and communication styles.
  • Skill to pay close attention to detail and prioritize workload with frequent interruptions
  • Ability to juggle many different projects simultaneously, with consistent accuracy, follow-through, and timely completion of projects.
  • Excellent communication skills to express ideas clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.
  • Strong group facilitation skills.
  • Strong curriculum-writing skills.
  • Ability to recognize and protect confidential information and exercise judgment, tact, and diplomacy in handling sensitive information and situations.
  • Ability to take initiative, problem solve and work independently with good judgment about when to seek direction.
  • Ability to work as a leading member in a team-oriented environment with an understanding of the larger unit and University contexts. This includes being part of an office team as well as collaborating with colleagues and non-University partners.
  • Must be highly proficient in Outlook, Microsoft Office, and Google Docs, have the ability to utilize current technology and attend to website updates and issues as needed.
  • Ability to consistently work some evenings and weekends for programming outside of regular business hours.
  • Master’s degree with 2-3 years of related professional experience.
  • Professional experience working in social justice education, including experience in the areas of race, ethnicity, nationality, class, disability, religion, sexuality, and gender.
  • Educational background in college student personnel, higher education administration, social work, counseling, sexuality and gender studies, or other related fields.
  • Experience with creative educational program development, including program planning, implementation, and assessment.
  • Experience with online outreach and current technology (i.e., social networking sites, virtual worlds, blogs, chat rooms, etc.).
  • Experience with supervising students is expected, as is student counseling and organization advising.
  • Experience developing assessment instruments, collecting and analyzing quantitative and/or qualitative data, and making data-driven strategic decisions aimed at continually improving programs and services is strongly preferred.
  • Proven technology skills across multiple social/media platforms are also needed.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal skills are essential.
  • Facilitation/training/teaching.
