The Reference and Instruction Librarian for STEM is part of a team that works together to provide high-quality reference, instruction, collection development, and outreach services to the entire LMU community, with a particular emphasis on LMU’s Seaver College of Science and Engineering. The Librarian for STEM also provides research assistance and foundational information literacy instruction for a wide range of academic disciplines. This position reports to the Head of Reference & Instructional Services.

 

 

Position Specific Responsibilities/Accountabilities 

 

Reference:

  • Provide individual and small-group research consultations for STEM and other subjects, both in-person and online via videoconferencing software. Also respond to e-mail and telephone requests from students and faculty. 

  • Provide virtual reference, including some evening and weekend hours.  

  • Provide reference and technological support in-person and via phone at the Information Desk. 

  • Create Web-based materials in support of library instruction and reference such as tutorials and subject specific research guides. 

  • Help the library explore and assess emerging technologies critical to the delivery of high- quality reference and informational services.  

 

Instruction:

  • Serve as lead provider of library instruction to graduate and undergraduate students in the College of Science and Engineering. Consults with faculty to plan instruction sessions, which may include evening classes.  

  • Provide library instruction to undergraduate and graduate LMU students in other subjects as needed, including the first-year Rhetorical Arts course.  

 

​Liaison Work

  • Serve as library liaison to selected academic departments in the Seaver College of Science and Engineering and related campus departments, which includes outreach, collection development and evaluation, and advanced information literacy support.  
     

Department Planning

  • Actively participate in departmental and library decision making and the realization of the departmental and library goals and objectives. Examples include: internal and external committee membership, co-developing and/or staffing events that promote the library to our community, and assisting in the training and supervision of student assistants or interns. 

 

Other

  • Perform other duties as assigned or requested by the Head of Reference and Instruction Services, such as LibGuides administration or reference collection development.

Qualifications 

 

Required:

  • A Master’s Degree in Library/Information Sciences from an ALA-accredited program.  Incumbent will be expected to continue upgrading knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to keep abreast of changes related to science librarianship. 

  • Undergraduate or graduate degree, certificate, or background in science, engineering, or a related field

  • Minimum two years’ professional experience in an academic library, or demonstrated relevant experience 

  • Demonstrated knowledge in the areas of basic reference sources and reference practices, library instruction, and information literacy

  • Proficient in Mac and Windows operating systems and commonly used productivity software such as Microsoft Office and Adobe products 

  • Ability to work cooperatively with colleagues in a team environment 

  • Ability to work patiently and cooperatively with faculty, students, and other library patrons from a variety of backgrounds 

  • Exemplary communication skills (interpersonal, written, and oral), evidenced by experience in preparing proposals or reports, presentations, or other means of synthesizing information to clearly communicate with others 

  • Demonstrated customer / user-centered service experience 

  • Flexibility to work occasional nights or weekends 

 

Preferred:

  • Experience providing science and/or engineering reference services.

  • Experience planning instruction and teaching in an academic library setting. 

  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with science or engineering resources, including tools such as Web of Science, PubMed, SciFinder Scholar, IEE Xplore, Engineering Village. 

  • Knowledge in the area of building, managing, and assessing science and engineering collections.

Location & Hours

 

This position is at the William H. Hannon Library, on the university's Westchester campus. Incumbent should expect to primarily work on campus; with hybrid schedule negotiable two days/week. Occasional nights and weekends may be required.
