Regular/Visiting Appointment | Assistant Professor Rank (Multiple Positions)

The College of Architecture, Art and Design (CAAD) at American University of Sharjah (AUS) invites applications for regular or visiting faculty positions—at the assistant professor level—in the Department of Art and Design. These positions provide an opportunity to contribute to a dynamic and diverse learning environment at an institution with students from approximately 90 countries. CAAD has established a reputation as a leader in design education in the region and graduates have gone on to study at top graduate programs across the globe and have established themselves as experts in creative industries within the region. AUS has been ranked among the top 200 programs globally in the Art and Design subject area by QS World University Subject Rankings.

CAAD offers five undergraduate programs leading to degrees in architecture, interior design, visual communication, multimedia design and design management, along with the Master of Urban Planning degree. The Department of Art and Design also offers minors in design management, film, illustration and animation, photography and product design. The curriculum is based on the North American model with liberal arts and sciences integrated with professional education. All courses are taught in English. Website https://www.aus.edu/caad. All positions come with a competitive salary and an attractive benefits package inclusive of free housing and generous retirement contributions along with funding for annual return airfare, school tuition for dependents and health insurance. The successful candidates for the multimedia design positions are expected to assume duties either in January or August 2023.

Multimedia Design (two appointments)

Successful candidates will primarily teach courses in the Bachelor of Science in Multimedia Design degree program and/or the Foundation Year. A terminal degree (MFA) in multimedia design, digital media or a related area is required along with relevant academic and professional experience. Candidates should have expertise in one or more of the following areas: video production and post-production, sound design, photography, interaction design, 2D and/or 3D animation, UX/UI, physical computing, app design and other digital media. These appointments are expected to commence either in January or August 2023.

Visual Communication (one appointment)

The successful candidate will primarily teach courses in the Bachelor of Science in Visual Communication degree program and/or the Foundation Year. A terminal degree (MFA) in visual communication or a related area is required along with significant academic and professional experience. Candidates should have expertise in one or more of the following areas: graphic design, photography and printmaking. They should also have the ability to teach drawing courses and beginning design studio courses. This appointment is expected to commence in August 2023.

Design Management (one appointment)

The successful candidate will primarily teach courses in the Bachelor of Science in Design Management degree program and must be able to teach in more than one of the following areas: creative strategy and execution, design thinking, design research, strategic storytelling, user-centered design, service design, strategic design and innovation ecosystems. A terminal degree (MFA or Ph.D.) in design management or a related area is required along with creative skills, digital fluency, as well as relevant academic and professional experience. This appointment is expected to commence in August 2023.

In addition to teaching, faculty are required to mentor students, engage in scholarly activities (which can include creative work, published research, or both), and participate in service activities for the college, university and community. Significant and impactful creative work and published research are departmental and university priorities. Regular faculty not only have access to scholarly opportunities but also generous financial support from the university to develop their scholarship. Applicants should have an excellent record of teaching and scholarship from a reputable university or the potential for developing such a record.
