Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIU) seeks an experienced development and alumni relations professional to continue to lead the university’s successful $500 million Forever SIU fundraising campaign as its next Vice Chancellor.  The individual must be an excellent team player who is eager to work collaboratively with the University’s alumni, donors, academic and governing leadership, students, faculty, staff and other stakeholders internal and external to the campus.

Founded in 1869, SIU Carbondale has more than 11,000 students and more than 3,000 faculty and staff.  The Carbondale campus is part of the SIU System and offers a full range of doctoral, master’s, bachelor’s and associate degrees in addition to professional degrees in law and medicine. It is a diverse, student-centered, research-intensive university that has earned national recognition for its teaching, research, service, civic engagement and commitment to diversity and inclusion.

The physical beauty of the region is a major attraction to students, staff, faculty and visitors. Sixty miles to the south of Carbondale is the historic confluence of the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers, the two forming the border of the southern tip of Illinois.  Just six hours south of Chicago and within easy driving distance of St. Louis, Memphis, Nashville and Indianapolis, SIU Carbondale draws students from the Midwest but also from nearly every U.S. state and nearly 100 nations.  A vibrant community of more than 20,000 residents, Carbondale is regarded as one of the best small cities in Illinois. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

Reporting directly to the university Chancellor and a member of the Chancellor’s Cabinet, the Vice Chancellor will provide executive leadership to the fundraising and alumni relations team while assuring the continued success of the Forever SIU fundraising campaign.

Specific responsibilities of the position include but are not limited to:

  • Lead and strengthen SIU Carbondale’s development and alumni relations efforts by providing solid management of personnel, budget and planning to achieve goals and outcomes set by the Chancellor and the SIU Foundation and SIU Alumni Association boards.
  • Working collaboratively across campus, work to ensure development and alumni relations staff have the resources, guidance and support needed to be successful and to build strategies for to advance the university.
  • Serve as the liaison to the Chancellor’s Cabinet and senior administrators on campus as well as to the SIU Foundation and SIU Alumni Association boards.
  • Serve as a representative of the University to donors and alumni in the regional community, state, nation and throughout the world to foster engagement activities that serve to benefit students, faculty, and staff.
  • Serve as the CEO of the SIU Foundation, pending approval by its board, and be accountable for managing current and future assets of the Foundation while providing guidance, direction and support to the board and manage all Foundation employees.
  • Ensure the University, SIU Foundation and SIU Alumni Association are properly engaged with individuals, corporations, foundations, and other organizations to further the mission of the University and that the communication of such engagement activities is effective.
  • Direct and lead the Forever SIU Campaign the $500 million fundraising campaign designed to increase support for Southern Illinois University Carbondale.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of ten years of experience at an institution of higher education including management of an area that has a direct interaction with development and alumni relations.
  • An ability to lead and motivate staff and encourage growth in people and programs.
  • An ability to assess and strength the components of the development and alumni relations operation.
  • Be an excellent team player and work collaboratively with the University community and governing boards. 

Preferred Qualifications:

Applicants holding advanced degrees are preferred.
