Job Description:

Basic Function and Responsibility:

The TRiO Student Support Services Advisor is a grant funded position responsible for assisting in student success by providing comprehensive support and retention services to students and by making timely referrals to appropriate offices. Will provide informed services that foster academic excellence among students who identify as first-generation, low-income, students with disabilities, and historically underrepresented populations.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Participate directly in the marketing, recruitment, selection, and retention of students who are eligible to receive program support services.
  • Build solid and trusting advising relationships with new and continuing students while monitoring their academic progress.
  • Maintain ongoing in-person, written, and electronic communications with students to ensure delivery of services and completion of educational/programmatic requirements.
  • Collect, verify, and input accurate student data into appropriate database systems on weekly basis.
  • Track and report service delivery efforts and outcomes on weekly basis to supervisor.
  • Provide individual and group advisement services including: academic advising, transfer planning, financial literacy education, academic skills and study strategies, career exploration, and personal support. Maintain records of student contacts.
  • Provide assistance to students in applying for and obtaining educational funds from sources at current and future educational institutions.
  • Plan and implement cultural and educational activities and educational opportunities for participants. This may include some evening and weekend hours in which limited travel may be necessary.
  • Meet regularly with TRIO SSS staff for planning and implementation of activities in order to meet grant objectives.
  • Participate in campus initiatives that support the program mission and goals, as well as creating and conducting presentations to market the program to diverse populations within the College.
  • Maintain social media and other online learning platform content for communication and educational needs of participants.
  • Maintain positive relationships with personnel from the College, the surrounding community, and other TRIO programs for referral purposes and as additional resources.
  • Participate in Enrollment Center, Student Success, and Access, Equity Diversity area trainings to develop knowledge in other functional student affairs areas in order to provide integrated and comprehensive information to students, staff, and community. Provide excellent customer service.
  • Perform other job related duties as assigned.

Requirements:

Qualifications and Working Conditions:
  • Master's degree in college student personnel, counseling, or related field is required.
  • One or more years of successful academic advising and/or student affairs experience, preferably in a college setting.
  • Experience working with students from underrepresented backgrounds.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, oral and written, are required, including the ability to develop and conduct presentations for a variety of audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a diverse population of students and colleagues.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including some evening and weekend hours, consistent with student and office needs. Travel between two campuses may be required based on student need or College events, meetings, and trainings.
  • Ability to read and accurately interpret academic, financial, and career advising information, in addition to interpreting and explaining College policies and procedures to students, is necessary.
  • Ability to integrate college-based, internet, and other computer-based information resources and software into the advising process.
  • Ability to utilize a keyboard to enter, maintain, and manipulate data on a personal computer is required.
  • Understanding of and commitment to diversity and cultural competence. Cultural competency is defined as a composite awareness, emotional maturity, insights, and skills including, but not limited to:
Self-insight, ability to suspend judgment and take responsibility for self.
Self-control of emotions and demonstration of empathy.
Experience with and success in valuing and working with people of different gender, gender identity, race, ethnicity, religion, national origin, socio-economic status, sexual orientation, etc.
  • Adaptability and flexibility in understanding and addressing problems and opportunities in situations where different cultural perspectives and points of view are in play.
Physical Demands:

General office environment. Little or no exposure to adverse working conditions.

Supervision Received:

Functional supervision is received from the TRiO Student Support Services (SSS) Manager. Administrative supervision is received from the AVP for Student Affairs/Dean of Access, Equity, and Diversity.

HOURS:

SALARY: $55,249

This is a temporary grant position and continued employment, is based on the successful renewal of the grant.

Based on the needs of the college and with Administrator approval, some positions at the college may have remote or hybrid schedule options available. Please note, that during the 65 working day probationary period, employees are required to report to campus.
