Official Title: Vehicle Equipment Technician III Business Title: Vehicle Equipment Technician Employment Class: University Staff FTE: 1.0 Compensation: $20.00-$22.00 FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Terms of Employment: Continuous Position Summary:

Performs diagnosis, maintenance, and repairs to automotive vehicles, large engines, diesel engines, hydraulic systems, air brake systems, large agricultural vehicles, and related equipment to ensure effective functioning of vehicles and equipment.

Must pass a pre-work screen to ensure the ability to perform essential physical functions of the position. Must have a valid WI driver’s license and be authorized to drive a University vehicle upon appointment. This position will require a background investigation.

Responsibilities
  • Inspects, maintains, and repairs complex parts and systems for large-engine vehicles and equipment under general supervision to ensure optimal and safe operation
  • Identifies and troubleshoots complex vehicle and large-engine issues and collaborates with work unit staff to resolve issues
  • Documents completed maintenance and repairs according to established policies and procedures
  • Serves as a point of contact to individuals providing information and updates about vehicle and large-engine maintenance and repairs
Qualifications Required:
  • Minimum of high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to grasp, lift and or carry tools, equipment or supplies, up to 50 pounds on a regular basis.
  • Physically be able to work in various positions, i.e. with arms above your head for periods of time; bending, twisting, crawling, squatting, climbing, stooping or kneeling.
  • Ability to wear protective equipment, i.e. respirator, hearing and eye protection, welding helmet, etc.
  • Analytical skills necessary to diagnose and correct the cause of both common and infrequent failures in equipment and systems
  • Knowledge of essential job functions and ability to safely perform the duties with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to perform duties within extreme temperature ranges, dusty and dirty environments to complete job assignments.
  • Ability to read, interpret and disseminate information contained in technical manuals, repair bulletins, schematics, specifications and related instructional materials.
  • Ability to plan, prioritize, schedule and expedite work request.
  • Must be well organized in relation to work orders, tools, equipment, materials, and general organization of the Auto Shop.
  • Maintain a professional and service orientated relationship with customers and co-workers; present a neat, clean appearance at all times.

Preferred:
  • Vocational degree and or certification in automotive repair.
  • Prior experience as an automotive/service technician.
  • Thorough knowledge of the occupational hazard and safety requirements in the automotive industry.
  • Knowledge of preventative maintenance programs and the ability to develop and implement an effective program.
  • Basic data entry skills to record and print work orders in the computerized maintenance management system; Ability to work with computers to record data, and communicate using email.
  • Effective interpersonal, written and oral communication skills.
  • Must be able to maneuver / drive a variety of vehicles for the purpose of snow plowing sidewalks and parking lots.
  • Knowledge of safe chain saw operation and tree trimming practices or willingness to attend classes or seminars on the topics.
