BASIC FUNCTION:

Reporting to the Vice President for Student Affairs, the Associate Vice President/Dean of Students (AVP/Dean) provides leadership focused on promoting student transformation by helping undergraduates to develop fully, realize their potential, and achieve personal goals. As a strategic and hands-on leader, the AVP/Dean directs a team that supports residence life, off-campus life, health services, counseling, first-year experience, engagement, and student conduct. As the chief judicial officer, the AVP/Dean leads institutional efforts in student behavioral intervention crisis management, and ensures policies and protocols are systematic, readily understood, and reflective of best national practices. Additionally, the AVP/Dean is responsible for coordination and oversight of the University's Title IX efforts, and shares oversight of compliance with state and federal discrimination laws and regulations with the Director of Human Resources, and enforces the University's Sexual Harassment Anti-Discrimination policy and procedures.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • The AVP/Dean must be a highly visible, proactive, and passionate advocate working on behalf of students in all facets of their development. The AVP and Dean of Students will provide institutional and divisional leadership in implementing strategies that reflect Salve Regina University's mission, Mercy and Catholic traditions, Signature Experience, and the Pillars of Student Affairs focused on creating a sense of belonging, fostering a healthy and wellness lifestyle, offering opportunities to provide diversity, equity, and inclusion, to deliver an active and vibrant student experience.
  • The AVP/Dean of Students will be expected to:
  • Lead a full-time staff of seven direct reports, including the Associate Dean of Students, Assistant Dean/Title IX Coordinator, residential life, off-campus life, health services, counseling, first-year experience, student engagement, and student conduct.
  • Demonstrate commitment to excellence in education inside and outside the classroom and to student development and the empowerment of students.
  • Provide and promote creative and innovative experiences that compel students to grow holistically in order to prepare them to contribute to the University community and beyond.
  • Know and be present to students; serve as an advocate for students; recognize and celebrate the achievements and contributions of students while educating the University community on the effectiveness of student affairs programming and services in addressing student needs, trends and issues.
  • Employ strategy to proactively lead and develop human and organizational resources to achieve divisional outcomes.
  • Understand current issues facing higher education and contemporary students with the ability to apply student-development theory to enact solutions and change on these issues.
  • Record of success in delivering outcomes deriving from complex issues, change management, process improvement, and the creation and implementation of data-driven, scalable, and effective strategies and programs.
  • Utilize entrepreneurial and fiscal skills to collaboratively address budgetary constraints.
  • Engage difference in a manner that will allow students to learn from diversity of perspectives, experience and traditions that exist within the University and beyond;
  • Assist with coordination of mental health and wellness education that focuses on prevention and holistic health
  • Provide a track record of collaboration, visibility, and accessibility to students, staff, university leadership, faculty, families, alumni, and other stakeholders.
  • Assume a leadership role for the area in assessment, compliance and policy matters;
  • Oversee the University's Title IX compliance, education, training and investigative efforts, and help strengthen a culture that supports a safe and respectful learning, working and living environment;
  • Showcase the application of ethics, values, and principles to personal and professional decision making.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Analyze, review and create strategic plans and/or projects.
  • Represent the division at university events related to orientation, admissions, student programs, alumni and athletic events.
  • Participate or chair committees, task forces and boards as requested by the Vice President.
  • Represent the Vice President for Student Affairs with her/his absence.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
This position could, on occasion, require bending, reaching, ascending and descending stairs, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, talking, and hearing.


Requirements:

QUALIFICATIONS:

A master's degree (doctorate preferred) in college student personnel administration, higher education administration, or a similar field with documented progressively responsible leadership and supervisory experience in Student Affairs is required. The successful candidate will also possess an understanding of and commitment to Salve Regina's Mercy, Catholic tradition and mission. A strong record of administrative leadership, demonstrating analytical ability in assessing learning outcomes and evaluating programs; developing staff and strategic priorities; and building productive and collaborative working relationships across campus are required. Familiarity with promising practices in areas in the Dean's portfolio, as well as strategies for building a just and supportive campus community are essential. Facility with current technology including use of social media, evidence of superior interpersonal and communication skills, and the ability to lead change?creating a student-centered culture that supports high standards of excellence for all members of the campus community?will be important considerations in the selection of the new AVP/Dean of Students.
