Duties of Position: Responsible for maintenance, care and modification of campus grounds. Duties include snow removal and first level maintenance on equipment as needed. Responds to emergency situations for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns within or outside normal working hours. Must be able to work shift work, weekends, overtime, and holidays.

Plants (or Transplants), cultivates and cares for shrubbery, trees, flowers, and lawn. Lays out work. Prepares soil, determines the amount of fertilizer and herbicides necessary and applies current gardening and landscaping techniques. Sprays and applies pesticides as needed. Prunes trees, shrubs and other vegetation, trims hedges and other shrubbery to obtain pleasant landscape appearance.

Performs miscellaneous grounds maintenance duties: rakes leaves, mows grass, sweeps campus sidewalks, driveways and streets, picks up paper, trash, and other litter, removes dead trees and limbs, waters lawns, flower beds and plants, sows grass seed and lays sod, does grading, excavating and shovel work, builds hardscapes, removes snow from streets, parking lots and sidewalks and operates tractor, truck, lawnmower, chain saw, forklift truck and miscellaneous equipment.

Performs repairs on grounds keeping equipment, manual lawnmower, riding lawnmower, and related equipment used in grounds keeping duties. Performs preventive maintenance including greases, oils, cleans and assures that equipment is in working order.

Cuts weeds and brush, rolls and maintains athletic fields; lines athletic fields; cleans and maintains tools, equipment, material, and supplies.

Inspects and repairs campus irrigation system.

Provides assistance in the greenhouse as necessary.

Inspects area of responsibility and observes activities on College property for unsafe conditions which may lead to injury, takes appropriate action to correct any unsafe practice or condition and reports all other potential safety hazards to supervisor.

Must be available (on call) for snow removal operations.

May provide guidance and direction for other personnel assigned to a work group in the performance of grounds keeping duties.

Assists other departments, students and guests as appropriate.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Equipment/Tools:

Employee must operate the following tools:
  • Motorized and electric vehicles
  • Motorized Landscaping equipment
  • Motorized snow removal equipment
  • Vehicles up to 24,999 pounds gross weight
  • Associated hand tools for landscaping and snow removal
  • Associated common hand tools
Work Conditions: Worker is subjected to both indoor and outdoor environmental conditions. Worker is exposed to pesticides, dust and other elements. Employee may be required to wear respiratory protection, hearing protection and other personal protective equipment on a daily basis. Worker may be assigned to work any one of the three shifts operating during a 24-hour period, and overtime and weekend work may be required.

Physical Requirements: Work is heavy in nature and involves exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or in excess of 50 pounds frequently. Work also involves lifting, grasping, stooping, climbing stairs, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and driving equipment.

Educational Requirements: High School Diploma or equivalent required.

Experience Requirements: One year experience preferred in grounds, nursery, gardening, or related work, and have performed maintenance on related equipment appropriate to the needs of the campus.

Licensing: Illinois Pesticides Applicators License in Turf, Ornamentals or Right-of-Way within one year of hire date. Valid Illinois CDL with Air Brakes driver’s license required within one year of hire date.
