Job Summary
Under the supervision of the Custodial Services Supervisor, this position is responsible for the performance of the required custodial/housekeeping duties for University Housing.

Custodians of University Housing are responsible for cleaning and maintaining safe environments within our residence halls. The custodians within University Housing have direct contact with the students in their living environments. During the summer months, the custodians turn over nearly 2,800 rooms within 1,200 suites. Suites have a variety of amenities ranging from full-size bathrooms, living rooms, and full-size kitchens. University Housing custodians provide cleaning services to office spaces, meeting rooms, event spaces, full-size laundry rooms, stairwells that rise up to 26 flights, 4 full-service restaurant operations kitchens, and fully furnished guest housing (i.e. “hotel”) rooms. Custodians may also be trained in forklift operation.

Workers in this position routinely lifts supplies and materials up to 50 pounds, walk steps, and perform repetitive motions in the performance of their duties.

First and second shift openings are currently available with a starting hourly rate of $15.00.

This position comes with a generous paid leave package including:
  • Vacation: 13 days/year
  • Observed Legal Holidays: Nine legal holidays are observed
  • Personal Holiday: 4.5 days/year
  • Sick Leave: 5 hours per paycheck, 130 hours (16.25 days) per year

Minimum Qualifications
  • Willingness to work one of the following three shifts:
    • 1st shift: Monday through Friday from 6:30 am to 3:00 pm
    • 2nd shift: Monday through Friday from 2:30 pm to 11:00 pm
    • 2nd shift: Wednesday through Sunday from 12:00 pm (Noon) to 8:30 pm


  • Ability to perform work outside in the heat or cold
  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 pounds
  • Willingness to clean public restrooms


Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated customer service experience or previous experience as a custodian or janitor in a high traffic public building, residence, hospital, hotel or similar
  • Experience cleaning restrooms and/or locker rooms
  • Experience cleaning floors and carpets (including floor stripping, refinishing, sealing, using large carpet machine, or extractor)
  • Experience cleaning commercial kitchens
  • Experience with COVID-19 cleaning protocols
  • Experience operating a forklift
