    Job Summary
    The Vice President of Academic Affairs (VPAA) serves as the Chief Academic Officer by leading, planning, organizing, and administering academic programs and related support activities that serve the needs of the diverse student body at Scottsdale Community College (SCC). The VPAA reports directly to the President and provides oversight to all instructional programs. This individual acts as an advisor to the College President in matters pertaining to instructional programs and services in the Maricopa County Community College District, works closely with the Vice President for Student Affairs and the Vice President for Administrative Services, and thus serves the best interests of the entire college. May act on behalf of the College President in the President's absence.

    To best serve the students, department, and college, this position requires a physical presence on campus, with the possibility of partial remote work depending on business needs.

    Essential Functions

    While the primary responsibility of the Vice President of Academic Affairs is oversight and support of the college instructional areas, this position also provides leadership for the institution at large fostering collaboration between academic affairs, student affairs, and academic services. The individual in this position serves as a member of the college executive leadership team and builds positive, collaborative relationships with peers.

    This position also supports Maricopa Community College District initiatives by participating in district leadership meetings such as the VP of Academic Affairs Council and the Curriculum Council. Additionally, the Vice President of Academic Affairs develops and fosters partnerships with external community members to advance the mission and vision of Scottsdale Community College and its surrounding communities.

    In support and oversight of faculty and students, this position:
  • Promotes and supports innovative approaches to teaching and learning.
  • Provides supervision and evaluation of the college's faculty.
  • Serves as the requisite administrator on the Faculty Staffing and Probationary Faculty Peer Assistance Review committees.
  • Monitors projects related to faculty.
  • Oversees academic initiatives related to student success and outcomes including persistence, retention and completion.
  • Provides leadership and administrative direction for the college's online learning programs.
  • Addresses student academic grievances, personnel issues, and complex legal issues.
  • Works to attain and exceed Governing Board outcomes related to improving developmental education, completion, and transfer.

    In support and oversight of course scheduling, curriculum, and accreditation this position:
  • Plans, directs and evaluates college instructional offerings to meet student, community, and industry needs including college transfer, career education and continuing and professional education.
  • Provides oversight for institutional and specialized accreditation.
  • Coordinates college curriculum development.
  • Assures compliance with all external regulatory agencies and organizations for all areas of responsibility.
  • Provides oversight and broad supervision to support areas such as the Library, campus learning centers, Institutional Research and Grants office and the Center for Teaching and Learning.

    In support of budgeting and strategic and operational planning, this position:
  • Provides leadership in support of strategic planning initiatives and efforts.
  • Monitors the Academic Affairs budget.

    In support of community partners and external agencies, this position:
  • Represents the college to external constituencies.
  • Develops, supports, and maintains effective relationships with business, industry, and community partners.
  • Actively participates with college Community Advisory Committees.
  • Prepares reports and presentations that represent the college locally, regionally, and nationally.

    Minimum Qualifications
    Non-Academic Pathway
  • Master's Degree from a regionally accredited institution in education or leadership related area
  • Four years of progressively responsible management and/or leadership experience such as program management, project management, budget development and management, staff supervision, policy development, administration, evaluation, that includes
  • Two years of supervisory experience
  • Equivalency allowed for Non-Academic area

    OR

    Academic Pathway
  • Master's Degree in a teaching field from a regionally accredited institution
  • Four years of experience in an academic leadership and/or supervisory role in higher education. Examples of academic leadership/supervisory experience includes: division/department chair, project management, policy development, administration, evaluation and compliance, committee leadership, program director, and shared governance, and
  • Three years of teaching that include curriculum/coursework development
  • No equivalency allowed

    Desired Qualifications
  • Earned Doctoral degree from a regionally accredited post-secondary institution
  • Five (5) or more years' experience in academic affairs administration at a comprehensive community college in a multi-college system
    Collegiate teaching experience either full-time or part-time
  • Demonstrated record of engagement in and commitment to shared governance for decision making.
  • Demonstrated record of data-informed decision making
  • Demonstrated record of creating and maintaining successful partnerships with business, industry, and/or community organizations
  • Demonstrated commitment to promoting equitable outcomes for students and contributing to an inclusive working and learning environment
  • Demonstrated participation and impact in developing and implementing a strategic enrollment and retention plan
  • Demonstrated support of innovative practices in teaching and learning
  • Demonstrated ability to use processes for and create results with college-wide collaboration
  • Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to academic freedom

  • Will be required to travel to other MCCCD locations.
  • May be required to work evenings and weekends.
