Job Description

The director of Syracuse University Press (SU Press or Press) serves as the publisher for the SU Press. The director has ultimate responsibility for all the Press’ activities in acquisitions, editorial, design, production, marketing, sales, accounting, fulfillment, and distribution. The director provides leadership to maintain the distinction and intellectual integrity of the Press by overseeing all aspects of editorial direction, planning, budgeting, staffing, and strategic management. The director oversees the daily operation of the SU Press and supervises a staff of approximately 14. The director represents the Press (and by extension the University] in professional meetings and associations. The director reports to the Libraries¿ Associate Dean of Research Excellence.

Qualifications

Advanced degree is required. Several years of progressively responsible experience in academic and/or regional trade publishing required including three or more years in a management role. Excellent communication, analytical, problem-solving, and organization skills are required. Additional preferred qualifications include creative and innovative leadership qualities; experience with digital content and electronic/online projects; understanding of current scholarly communication issues in academia; experience and success in fund-raising; ability to develop partnerships with other university departments; and proficiency in the use of standard office equipment and various software applications, including database, spreadsheet, and word-processing programs.

Job Specific Qualifications

Familiarity with all aspects of publishing, acquisitions, fiscal management, information technology, electronic projects, production, marketing, rights, inventory, and distribution is required; significant in-depth experience in a least four of these areas is preferred.

Responsibilities
  • Supervise the acquisitions and development of titles to continue building the Press’ reputation as a national leader in scholarly and regional publishing and to maintain the distinction and intellectual integrity of the Press. The director meets with the acquisitions editors to discuss list building and the status of publications series. The director reviews all manuscript proposals, peer review reports, and editorial board recommendations. The director reviews all contract and legal documents prepared for the Press before sending them for university approval.
  • Manage an efficient, creative, and high-functioning staff to promote editorial, design, production, marketing, and sales excellence. With department managers, the director reviews the status of publishing schedules, operations, marketing activity, and university matters. The director encourages staff to participate in staff development activity through professional meetings and campus offerings.
  • Ensure the overall fiscal health of the Press. The director monitors annual budget by reviewing monthly financial statements, account reconciliations, and sales reports with the senior business manager. The director provides financial reports to the Associate Dean of Research Excellence and works with the Libraries’ Budget Director to review the budget status. The director reviews all manufacturing bids and selects print quantities and printers for books. The director reviews and approves all invoices and university charges.
  • Investigate and direct the application of digital technologies. The director conducts research on software platforms for title management, digital activity, digital content vendors, and digital aggregators to provide efficient workflow options for the Press. The director determines the list of titles designated for EPUB conversions.
  • Articulate the Press’ needs externally and within the University. The director prepares reports for the university administration and the Associate Dean of Research Excellence on the status of the Press. The director works with the Press¿ marketing staff on public relations, website development, and social media. The director seeks opportunities for grants and donations to support the publishing operation of the Press. The director is a member of the Library Management Team that meets twice a month.
