Description:
Do you have experience in supporting Art galleries and studios and enjoy working in a creative learning environment? Pratt's Fine Arts department is seeking a Gallery and Studio Supervisor that maybe the right role for you.

The Gallery and Studio Supervisor in Fine Arts will be responsible for overseeing the undergraduate studios and Fine Arts campus galleries and classrooms, including some A/V technology The Gallery and Studio Manager also assists with tours for prospective students, and manages the logistics of BFA Thesis Shows.

The Undergraduate Department of Fine Arts offers five areas of emphasis: Drawing, Jewelry, Painting, Printmaking, and Sculpture & Integrated Practices. We educate students to use their curiosity, talent, and intellect to build a unique artistic vision upon a common cultural ground. Through a studio-based art curriculum and broad offerings in the liberal arts and sciences, students learn new ways of seeing, thinking, and expressing themselves. A dedicated professional faculty with a commitment to excellence fosters the value of academic inquiry, the development of an individual work ethic, and consideration of humanistic values and their consequences. Together with the Institute at large, the Undergraduate Department of Fine Arts provides students with the freedom and opportunity to develop as artists and citizens, envisioning its alumni to be significant contributors to artistic, scholarly, and societal discourse.

Position Responsibilities:
Studios & Classrooms
  • Organize and manage Readiness of all studios, classrooms and storage areas (lockers, painting racks, etc.) at the start of each semester. Manage the clean-out of all studios, classrooms and storage areas (lockers, painting racks, studios) at the end of each semester.
  • Monitor and manage the check-in/check-out process for studios each semester, including signing of studio contracts, maintenance of contract files and exchange of keys.
  • Work with Pratt Facilities to complete requests for maintenance and repairs/improvements of studios, galleries, and classrooms.
  • Provide weekly EPA reporting and weekly checks of all classrooms and studios, whether group or individual. Post signage as needed.
  • Notify students of warnings for infractions of health and safety issues; report infractions directly to the chairperson (i.e. improper storage of chemicals, improper or missing labeling, etc.).
  • Conduct clinics on safe use of materials with all sophomore painting classes.
  • Maintain rosters of all undergraduate students with studios, room numbers, address, and telephone/email contact information.
  • Work with Assistant to the Chair to spec, source, and fill out purchase requisitions for Fine Arts' equipment & materials needs.
  • Install and maintain A/V equipment in Fine Arts classrooms/studios that have not been installed by Pratt's IT division. This includes researching new or replacement equipment and filling out purchase requisitions and instructing faculty on use.
  • Maintain printed instructions near equipment for reference.
  • Supervise student workers.

Galleries
  • Manage and facilitate the scheduling and installation of shows for Fine Arts Galleries (Steuben, East Hall and Dekalb) and the Fine Arts Office, including lighting.
  • Facilitate the delivery/receipt of work for off-campus shows, including oversight of hired installers and/or hiring student workers for installation.

Additional
  • Provide tours to prospective Fine Arts students, as requested.
  • Coordinate with the Pfizer Facilities Manager for the campus portion of MFA tours.
  • Perform all other related duties as assigned.

This is a Local 153 union technical position. The salary range for this position is $53,911 - $53,911.


Qualifications:
Education: BA or BFA in studio arts or equivalent experience required. MFA in studio arts area preferred.

Experience: Has supervised art studios, galleries or other arts-related facilities. Has had work responsibilities in an art educational environment. Is familiar with A/V technical support and troubleshooting.

Skills:
  • Understanding of health and safety regulations, both Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Institutional. Able to instruct and conduct assessments of health and safety issues in undergraduate Painting studios and take proactive steps to correct infractions and notify those responsible.
  • Able to communicate clearly, both verbally and in writing.
  • Good organizational and managerial skills.
  • Working knowledge of procedures pertinent to teaching and learning in a studio context.
  • Enthusiastic about working in an urban environment of diverse students and faculty.
  • Familiar with, and able to troubleshoot, A/V technology systems.
  • Friendly, collegial personality; able to manage occasional stress and work well with others.
  • Must have the ability to communicate effectively with a diverse population of students and staff, as well as demonstrate inter-cultural competence with an understanding of the dynamics of diversity in higher education.
