Description:
The School of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the Pratt Institute seeks exceptional applicants for the position of Assistant Dean. Reporting to the Dean and working closely with department chairs, the selected candidate will help implement the academic strategic plan for the School of Liberal Arts and Sciences making sure that initiatives align with Pratt's overall mission and strategic plan. The Assistant Dean will also be responsible for informing, developing, and overseeing the implementation of guidelines and procedures concerning the School of Liberal Arts and Sciences (SLAS) curriculum, program review, assessment, academic hiring, and peer review, with input on all aspects of related educational space planning.

Pratt's School of Liberal Arts and Sciences provides a rigorous, student-centered education that emphasizes an education in the liberal arts disciplines to meet the challenges of the 21st century. Our degrees and the general education programs prepare students to navigate the future broadening their perspectives on society and global issues. The School is responsible for delivering the general education program to all Pratt undergraduate students and offers undergraduate and graduate degrees. Guided by a passionate faculty, students learn to integrate the values of liberal arts education into their practices.

The Assistant Dean acts as a resource for the school's five departments (Humanities and Media Studies, History of Art and Design, Mathematics and Science, Social Science and Cultural Studies, and Writing) and two academic programs (Intensive English Program, and the Writing and Tutorial Center) while also serving as a liaison to Foundation, other schools at Pratt, and the community beyond campus.

The selected candidate will oversee the general education program that educates art, design, and architecture students in the liberal arts disciplines and coordinate the participating departments in general education in offering courses, their assessment, and curricular development. The Assistant Dean will oversee the activities of the General Education Committee and interact with Undergraduate Advising and the Registrar's office to make sure that our course offerings meet the student's needs. Further, the Assistant Dean will play a role in the communication of the general education program, the Intensive English Program , and the Writing and Tutorial Center to students, facilitating their understanding of curricular offerings and available services.

Located on Pratt's historic 25-acre campus in the culturally diverse neighborhood of Clinton Hill, Brooklyn, Pratt is an internationally recognized school of architecture, art, design, and information, which draws students from diverse cultural and geographic backgrounds. Pratt offers nearly 50 undergraduate and graduate degree programs.

Position Responsibilities


  • Working with the Dean and department chairs the Assistant Dean will implement all the curricular components of all academic programs in the School of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

  • Oversee the SLAS general education program, its implementation, and assessment, in concert with the department's curriculum committees, the SLAS curriculum coordinator, and the Gen Ed faculty committee. Ensure that the goals of general education align with Institute learning outcomes.

  • Oversee curricular development in an integrated manner across departments.

  • Maintain regular communications with the Registrar and Provost's offices (in regards to course proposal and scheduling).

  • Create and maintain a database of SLAS courses and syllabi.

  • Assist in bridging the gap between other Pratt schools' curricula and general education courses and requirements.

  • Streamline the course inception process, and eliminate duplicate courses across departments.

  • Coordinate SLAS minor programs, establishing procedures and processes for their creation, coordination, and assessment.

  • Serve as a non-voting member on the School of Liberal Arts and Sciences curriculum committee; advise departmental curriculum committees and act as a liaison to the Institute Curriculum Committee; work in concert with the Provost's Office and other Schools of the Institute and Foundation in matters of general education and shared programs.

  • Working with the Dean and department chairs, the Assistant Dean will participate in exploring new technologies for the delivery of Liberal Arts disciplines to students both in-person and online.

  • Assist in the process of hiring department chairs as well as day-to-day oversight and guidance; offer ongoing support to department chairs and intervene as needed on individual academic and personnel issues.

  • Assist Dean in managing faculty evaluation and promotion process including appointments, reappointments, promotion, and tenure in accord with applicable policies and standards as well as in accordance with the faculty union collective bargaining agreement.

  • Assist Dean in the supervision of Dean's administrative staff in the following areas: appointment, reappointment, tenure and promotion; academic program reviews and accreditation; curriculum; faculty and chairs searches.

  • Assist in daily operational activities such as conferring with faculty and students; supporting school-wide events and projects; supporting external relationships with alumni, donors, and professional partners; conducting research, and preparing data.

  • Participate in and assume all other related responsibilities as required.


Teaching: The Assistant Dean will have the option to teach one course per semester in their area of expertise, with additional compensation.

Salary Range: $115K - $120K


Qualifications:
Education

A terminal degree in the School of Liberal Arts and Sciences in an academic area of interest is required. A Ph.D. is strongly preferred.

Experience

At least 5 years of college teaching experience. Previous experience as an academic administrator in higher education including significant experience with curriculum development, planning, and assessment as well as academic advisement. Experience with graduate-level programs desired.

Skills

Superior interpersonal, written, and oral communication, as well as collaboration skills, are required; proficiency in Google suite, calendar management, digital teaching tools, and MS Office is required. Must be willing to learn new administrative tools and show excellent organizational skills.
