Position Description

The Department of Curriculum and Instruction at Texas State University is seeking to hire two professors of special education at the Assistant Professor or Associate Professor ranks. These are full-time tenured or tenure-track positions with nine-month academic year appointments beginning in Fall 2023.

The Special Education program is housed within the Department of Curriculum and Instruction in the College of Education. This innovative and rapidly growing program offers undergraduate teacher certification, and graduate concentrations in Applied Behavior Analysis ( ABA ) and Neurodevelopmental Disorders, Positive Behavioral Supports and Behavioral Disorders, Teacher Certification, and Learning Disabilities.

We are seeking two faculty members, at either the assistant professor or associate professor rank, with expertise in evidence-based intervention practices for people with neurodevelopmental and learning differences (intellectual/developmental disabilities, behavioral disorders, autism, Down syndrome, Fragile X). Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Delivering quality instruction in undergraduate and/or graduate courses in the Special Education program.
  • Delivering instruction in Board Certified Behavior Analyst verified course sequence.
  • Participating in the leadership and/or research activities of the university-based Clinic for Autism Research Evaluation and Support ( CARES ).
  • Pursuing a focused area of scholarship that culminates in refereed publications, professional presentations, and external funding.
  • Contributing to efforts to become accredited by the Association of Behavior Analysis International.
  • Developing and participating in collaborative partnerships with other Texas State programs and area schools.
  • Mentoring students and assisting with student support and recruitment activities.
  • Engaging in service at the program, university, and profession levels.
Required Qualifications

Assistant Professor Required Qualifications
  • Earned doctorate in Behavior Analysis, Special Education, Psychology, or a closely related field from an accredited institution of higher education. Applicants may be in dissertation process at time of application, but must have completed Ph.D. before hire date.
  • Earned Board Certification in Behavior Analysis ( BCBA or BCBA -D) by hire date.
  • Evidence of potential for excellence in scholarly activity in at least one of the following fields: Applied Behavior Analysis, Special Education, Positive Behavior Supports, Emotional and Behavioral Disorders, Assistive Technology, Developmental and Intellectual Disability, or another closely related field as evidenced by publications, presentations, grants, and other similar professional work.
  • Commitment to issues of equity, access, multilingual learning, and culturally sustainable responsive praxis.
Associate Professor Required Qualifications
  • Earned doctorate in Behavior Analysis, Special Education, Psychology, or a closely related field from an accredited institution of higher education.
  • Earned Board Certification in Behavior Analysis ( BCBA or BCBA -D).
  • Evidence of excellence in teaching in higher education.
  • Record of excellence in scholarly activity in at least one of the following fields: Applied Behavior Analysis, Special Education, Positive Behavior Supports, Emotional and Behavioral Disorders, Assistive Technology, Developmental and Intellectual Disability, or another closely related field as evidenced by multiple high quality peer-reviewed publications, presentations, grants, and other similar professional work.
  • Demonstrated record of external research funding to support research, community engagement, program development and/or personnel preparation.
  • Record of service at the department, college, and/or university level.
  • Commitment to issues of equity, access, multilingual learning, and culturally sustainable responsive praxis.
Preferred Qualifications

Assistant Professor Preferred Qualifications
  • Record of, or clearly demonstrated potential for, external grant funding to support research, community engagement, program development and/or personnel preparation.
  • Experience working in public school, juvenile justice system, or clinical setting serving individuals with emotional/behavioral disorders, intellectual/developmental disabilities, and/or learning disabilities.
  • Evidence of potential for service at the department, college, and/or university level.
  • Teacher certification.
  • Evidence of excellence in teaching in higher education.
  • Multilingualism.

Associate Professor Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working in public school, juvenile justice system, or clinical setting serving individuals with emotional/behavioral disorders, intellectual/developmental disabilities, and/or learning disabilities.
  • Teacher certification.
  • Experience as Verified Course Sequence ( VCS ) Coordinator for Behavior Analyst Certification Board and/or experience in an Association of Behavior Analysis International accredited ABA program.
  • Multilingualism.
  • Evidence of expertise in Positive Behavior Supports, Organizational Behavior Management, or school administration.
