Job Details

The Department of Psychology at Butler University invites applications for two tenure-track Assistant Professors in Psychology to start in August 2023. We seek two colleagues who are committed to inclusive, excellent undergraduate teaching and collaborative research with undergraduate students and who will be able to support our progress towards building more inclusive learning environments for an increasingly diverse student population.

Successful applicants will be broadly trained in psychology and will be ready to teach in a multidisciplinary university core curriculum. Standard teaching load is nine (9) credit hours per semester plus an active program of research involving undergraduate collaborators. In addition to teaching courses in their respective sub-fields, we seek colleagues who will be ready to teach required psychology courses such as research methods and statistics, introductory psychology, social psychology, learning, personality, and/or biological psychology. Ideal candidates will have demonstrated excellence in inclusive teaching and a clear commitment to supporting a diverse student body, both in the classroom and through their research.

Both positions require full-time, in-person instruction. A Ph.D. in psychology (or a closely related field; e.g., Cognitive Science, Neuroscience, Organizational Behavior) at time of appointment is required. Research specialization in Social Psychology, Biological Psychology, or Animal Behavior

is preferred.

Butler University offers support for faculty development in many ways, including start-up funds for research, internal grants for collaborative research with undergraduates, a learning community for new faculty, and funds to travel to present research. Butler is in the process of completing the Sally Bell Beck Psychology Suite, which will house the Psychology Department starting in 2023. This modern space includes faculty offices, labs, and classrooms and is part of the new science complex at Butler University. More information about our department and the University can be found at: https://www.butler.edu/arts-sciences/psychology .

To apply, applicants should submit the following:
  • a cover letter discussing qualifications for and interest in the position
  • statement(s) of teaching and research interests, including evidence of teaching effectiveness, plans for a program of research with the support of undergraduate students, and commitment to diversity and inclusion
  • a CV
  • transcripts of graduate work or other evidence of terminal degree(s) (unofficial is acceptable for candidate review)
  • a representative sample of scholarly work
  • a list of 3-5 references, including name, title, and contact information
Shortlisted candidates will be asked to provide at least three letters of recommendation. We value faculty whose work advances issues of social justice and we are eager to diversify our faculty. Thus, we encourage applications from members of historically underrepresented groups in higher education.

Review of applications will begin October 3rd, 2022 and will continue until the positions are filled. Please direct questions to Amanda C. G. Hall, Ph.D., Chair of Psychology, mhall2@butler.edu .

Butler University

With just over 5,000 students, we’re relatively small as far as universities go. That’s a good thing—it means classes are more personally engaging and professors are always available to help.

But in terms of opportunity, Butler University is about as big as it gets. Indianapolis is one of the largest and most dynamic cities in the Midwest. As residents, Butler students can plug right into the real-world through internships, co-ops, undergraduate research, public performances, and community partnerships. These experiences provide working knowledge and skills that students need to excel after college.

A career at Butler University means so much more than a job.  Join the dedicated, innovative, and supportive community of faculty and staff that is moving Butler Beyond.
