Position Summary

The Department of Sociology at the University of Georgia invites applications for Department Head to begin in August 2023. This appointment carries the rank of Associate or Full Professor.

The Department Head is chief administrative officer of the department with responsibility for instructional efforts and for operational management including administrative, budgetary, promotion and recruitment programs. The ideal head will work effectively with other units within the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences, the Office of Research, and the Office of Instruction to enhance the mission of the Department, the College, and the University. The Head will also teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels, advise students and provide service to the university. The successful candidate will be expected to promote research excellence, support efforts to obtain external research funding, and continue the department’s tradition of transparency, collaboration, shared faculty governance, and strong commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion in higher education.

About the College/Unit/Department

The Department of Sociology on the main Athens campus is a broad-spectrum department supporting methodologically diverse research specialties, including race/ethnicity, criminology, gender, social psychology, health/medical sociology, and Latin American studies. Departmental faculty participate in a number of university centers and institutes such as the Owens Institute for Behavioral Research, the Criminal Justice Studies Program, the Institute for African American Studies, the Center for Family Research, the Institute for Women’s Studies, and the Latin American and Caribbean Studies Institute. The Department has approximately 20 full-time faculty, including one on the Griffin campus. The operations of the department are supported by four administrative staff and additional staff in the Franklin College. The department maintains a PhD program with approximately 40 graduate students and an undergraduate program with approximately 400 majors and minors.

Requirements for each rank are outlined in the University’s Appointment, Promotion and Tenure Guidelines and the Department of Sociology’s Promotion and Tenure Guidelines . To be eligible for tenure upon appointment, candidates must be appointed as a Full Professor, have been tenured at a prior institution, and bring a demonstrably national reputation to the institution. Candidates must be approved for tenure upon appointment before hire.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

The successful candidate will show evidence of sociological framing of research, a record of distinguished scholarship and teaching close to or commensurate with the rank of full professor, an established track record of administrative and leadership skills, a history of collaboration between academic units, and expertise with the tenure and promotion process.

We are especially interested in candidates with a demonstrated ability to foster collaboration among a diverse group of scholars, as well as a strong record of external funding and academic recognition.
