One of the largest departments on the SUNY Cortland campus, the English Department is composed of approximately forty faculty across four programs—Literature, Professional Writing, Adolescence Education in English, and Composition. The Department offers three undergraduate majors—English, Professional Writing, and Adolescence Education in English—serving approximately 200 majors and minors, and two graduate degrees—the M. A. in English and the M. A. T. in Adolescence Education—serving approximately twenty-five students, in addition to offering courses that support students in other undergraduate education programs. With small class sizes, our faculty get to know our students well, with additional opportunities to work with students outside the classroom through research or through Department clubs.

Major Responsibilities

RESPONSIBILITIES :
Teaching
Teach and assess learning in courses in English studies, which may include introductory, advanced, and graduate level courses as well as the later British literature survey.

Scholarship/Research
Maintain an active scholarly program.

Service
Participate in department, school and university-wide committees, and other forms of service.

Functional and Supervisory Relationships
  • Works under the direct supervision of the Department Chair.
  • Works closely with Department faculty and staff.
  • Additional working relationships with faculty and staff in other College departments.
Required Qualifications
  • Ph. D. by time of appointment with specialization in Global Anglophone Modernisms
  • Record of teaching excellence
  • Evidence of scholarly potential
Preferred Qualifications
  • Expertise in the study of poetry
  • Additional interests in the study of race, empire, and/or the environment
