Position Summary

At SUNY Cortland we believe that an equitable, inclusive, and diverse campus and curriculum are critical to our educational mission. To support this mission, we are seeking a tenure-track assistant professor in Special/Inclusive Education with a joint appointment to a two-year term in SUNY Cortland’s Diversity Faculty Fellows ( DFF ) Program. The aim of the DFF program is to attract diverse faculty of promise to our campus who have a record of professional and personal commitment to the academic success of historically marginalized groups of students as well as demonstrated engagement in scholarly activity and service at the intersection of education, anti-racism, diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice. Assistant professors with joint appointments to our DFF Program will help support the infusion of these topics in the departmental and/or university-wide curriculum.
During their initial two-year appointment in the DFF program, the Assistant Professor of Special/Inclusive Education will:
  • Have a reduced teaching load of 12 credits per year (6 credits per semester)
  • Be assigned a mentor to support their professional development
  • Participate in a campus-based professional development program with other SUNY CortlandDFF’s designed specifically to further their growth and ensure their success
  • Have the opportunity to teach at least one course a year which addresses equity and inclusion as part of its content.
  • Have their two-year appointment within the DFF Program count towards tenure and promotion.

DEPARTMENT : The Assistant Professor of Inclusive/Special Education with a joint appointment to the DFF program will be housed in the Foundations and Social Advocacy Department at SUNY Cortland which promotes a reflective, critical, interdisciplinary approach to understanding the multiple and shifting contexts and practices of education. Faculty and students advocate for social justice and equity in education through teacher preparation emphasizing foundations of education, urban education, and inclusive education. We offer an undergraduate dual certification program in general and special education grades 1-6, and graduate programs for initial certification in special education grades 1-6 and grades 7-12 and an advanced certificate in educational leadership.

Major Responsibilities

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES : The successful candidate will be expected to:
  • Teach a reduced load of 12 credits per year (6 per semester) for the duration of the two-year DFF program, at the conclusion of which, the teaching load will be 18 credits per year (9 per semester).
  • Teach courses with content such as universal design for learning, pedagogies for supporting learners with an array of strengths and needs, and disability studies in education frameworks.
  • Support the infusion of topics related to equity and inclusion in the departmental and/or college-wide curriculum.
  • Participate in all aspects of the DFF program described above for the first two years.
  • Develop an active scholarly or research agenda at the intersection of Special/Inclusive Education and diversity, equity, inclusion and justice.
  • Provide service to the Foundations and Social Advocacy Department, the School of Education, and the university.
  • Provide scheduled office hours and support students outside of the classroom through advising, mentoring, work with student clubs, etc.
Functional and Supervisory Relationships

The Assistant Professor of Special/Inclusive Education with a joint appointment as a DFF will:
  • Serve as a tenure-track faculty member of the Foundations and Social Advocacy Department
  • Report to the academic department chair
  • Work for the first two years of their appointment as a member of a DFF cohort of new academics who work collectively to support an inclusive community and campus climate.
Required Qualifications
  • An earned Masters degree in special or inclusive education or closely related field.
  • An earned doctorate or ABD (with a stated completion date) in Inclusive or Special Education or Disability Studies or related field. NOTE : ABD doctoral candidates who will not complete within the first year of their appointment will be hired at the rank of Instructor and will be eligible for promotion to Assistant Professor upon completion of their doctorate.
  • Evidence of a scholarly agenda, including research-based presentations and/or publications.
  • Demonstrated academic, professional and/or personal experience in engaging with diversity, equity, inclusion and justice issues.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Relevant teaching experience supporting equity and inclusion at the college level;
  • Elementary or secondary school teaching certification and experience;
  • Experience working collaboratively across diverse settings including in professional development schools and/or in partnerships with P-12 schools;
  • Experience teaching in a variety of formats (in-person, hybrid, online);
  • Experience and/or expertise in one or more of the following areas: co-teaching, teaching English language learners, urban education, culturally relevant or responsive teaching, specially designed instruction, and universal design for learning;
  • Early career scholar seeking to gain experience in a full-time faculty position in a supportive, inclusive environment.
