Assistant Professor of Engineering Writing

For Fall 2023

The Department of Humanities and Communication at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Prescott, AZ, is seeking to fill a 9-month, tenure-track position for Assistant Professor of Engineering Writing.

Responsibilities

The successful candidates will teach a 4/4 load of undergraduate courses in engineering writing, including courses team taught with engineering faculty. These courses increase student familiarity in engineering disciplines with writing, oral communication, and teamwork.

The candidate will teach other writing and humanities courses that fit the department’s needs and the candidate’s interests. Candidates will have a 3/3 teaching load in the first year and can receive additional course reassignments for research.

The successful candidates will support the department, college, and campus through service and cultivate and maintain a research agenda in the candidates’ area of expertise. In addition, the candidate will participate in the department’s development of an integrated writing in the disciplines curriculum and ongoing programmatic assessment efforts for the engineering writing program.

Qualifications

Requirements

An earned Ph.D. in Technical Writing, Rhetoric and Composition, Professional Writing, or related field at the time of the appointment on August 15, 2023. The candidate must have experience teaching writing courses at the college level, evidence of scholarship, and an interest in professional development.

Preferred Qualifications

We are interested in candidates with expertise in one or more of the following areas:
  • Experience teaching engineering communication courses that provide practical rhetorical knowledge to engineering majors, minors, and related fields in the aerospace industry
  • Professional experience as a technical communicator/technical writer
  • Course design that allows students to engage in applied or experiential learning
  • Collaborative teaching, team-teaching, or co-teaching experience
  • Professional experience writing in the disciplines
  • Experience cultivating industry relationships to develop an engineering writing internship course at the undergraduate level.
The Department of Humanities and Communication offers a range of general education courses and a Humanities minor. This position will collaborate closely with other departments and programs to support the University’s core curriculum and STEM-related missions.
