Academic Unit Head - Early, Elementary, and Reading Education

The Early, Elementary, and Reading Education (EERE) Department at James Madison University invites applications for the position of Academic Unit Head (AUH) to begin July 1, 2023.

The vision of the College of Education is to be a model for transforming educational landscapes into those that develop and inspire learners, educators, and leaders to effect positive, sustainable change. We work to disrupt, interrupt, and change systemic inequities in P-12 schools, adult education, and higher education by demanding equal and equitable participation, power, access, impacts, and outcomes for all groups, by embedding educational justice as part of our culture through people, places, programs, policies, and processes.

The EERE Department, which has approximately 70 full- and part-time faculty, offers a B.A., B.I.S., M.Ed. and a M.A.T. and serves students seeking licensure in Early Education, Elementary Education, and advanced studies in Literacy.

 Duties and Responsibilities:

The successful candidate should: demonstrate a collaborative leadership style that involves working with colleagues both within and beyond the academic unit; articulate an ambitious, future-oriented vision for the Department that includes attracting diverse new faculty and students to the programs; lead efforts to advance equity and social justice; help the faculty identify and achieve emerging program priorities; manage enrollment; support faculty teaching, research, and creative scholarship in a variety of subfields; maintain faculty governance policies; and, effectively advocate for the EERE Department.

Teaching one course per year, the AUH is a 12-month appointment and reports directly to the Dean of the College of Education.

 Qualifications:

Candidates should hold an appropriate terminal degree in Education, have attained the rank of Associate or Full Professor (or be qualified for appointment at that rank), experience teaching in a public P-12 setting, and experience in teacher education at the university level. The search committee is especially interested in candidates who have experience in partnering with their local school divisions and teacher education programs (e.g. lab schools, early learning centers) and have demonstrated a commitment to building an equitable and diverse scholarly environment.
