Job Details

The South Dakota State University School of Design invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Interior Design, to begin no later than January 2, 2023. The position is a full time, nine-month, benefit eligible appointment and reports to the Director of the School of Design. South Dakota State University promotes access to and opportunities for all to receive the benefit of and participate in education, research, and service and is especially interested in candidates that can contribute to this land-grant mission of access.

The School of Design has three accredited-built environment majors: architecture, landscape architecture and interior design. The School of Design also includes the visual arts: graphic design, and studio arts. Collectively, School faculty form a collaborative teaching and research environment that values cross-program and interdisciplinary initiatives. The successful candidate will contribute to building national and international stature and recognition for the discipline, School and University.

SDSU offers a 4-year CIDA accredited Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interior Design degree. The mission of Interior Design is to prepare graduates for professional practice or advanced study in interior design through research informed, design thinking infused and practice-based projects and opportunities. https://www.sdstate.edu/school-design/interior-design

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Teaching courses within the professional curriculum, such as design studios, lectures, seminars, and workshops.
  • Carrying out a dynamic and robust agenda of research, scholarship and creative activity.
  • Providing service to the discipline, university, and community.
  • Teaching in multi-disciplinary courses within the School of Design.

DISCIPLINARY CONTENT AREAS:

Interior design, construction, products and materials, environmental systems, codes and regulations, and professional practices.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Terminal degree (Masters or PhD) in Interior Design or related field or international equivalent by time of appointment.
  • Two years professional practice experience in interior design.
  • Potential to develop and teach academic coursework in one or more of the disciplinary content areas.
  • Potential to develop a peer-reviewed research/scholarship/creative activity agenda in the discipline.
  • Effective written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S. Sponsorship is not available for this position.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • PhD in Interior Design or a related field by time of appointment.
  • Professional NCIDQ certification.
  • Record of peer-reviewed research/scholarship/creative activity.
  • Record of extending research/scholarship/creative activity agenda into the teaching environment.
  • Record of service within the discipline and/or profession.
