Job Summary:
The College Library security officer works second shift hours (4:00pm-12:30am during semesters, adjusted for varied library hours in summer/breaks) Sunday-Thursday evenings. The person in this position creates strong relationships with library patrons and staff and maintains the safety and security of patrons, staff, collections, equipment, and facilities. While based in College Library, this position also conducts routine security rounds to identify, report, and potentially resolve security issues in Steenbock and Memorial Libraries or other libraries across campus as needed. Administrative tasks related to closing the library, keys, and lost and found are included in this position. Professional development opportunities are available to support growth, communication, and decision-making that will positively impact the experiences of library users and staff.

Provides assistance with administrative or operational unit tasks.

- Experience in public service (i.e. customer service, health care, case work, security/safety, working with the public)
- Experience in conflict resolution, de-escalation, bystander intervention, and/or similar methods
Preferred:
- Security experience or related experience managing, communicating, and/or enforcing policies
- Ability to make sound judgment calls in emergency, medical, or public service interactions
- Committed to creating positive interactions with a diverse patron and staff population
- Able to work independently as well as collaboratively to keep people and spaces safe
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills

- 50% Completes security and safety checks on institutional property by vehicle patrol, foot patrol, and bicycle patrol or at a fixed location
- 15% Responds to emergency situations, assists with safety and security investigations, and accurately documents activities according to established policies, procedures, and applicable laws
- 15% Assists with routine unit administrative operational activities
- 10% Engages in problem solving and community engagement with security issues
- 5% Stays familiar with the environment and climate of the General Library System, as well as the specific environments of College, Steenbock, and Memorial Libraries.
- 5% Regularly engages in professional development and/or training opportunities
- The security officer is responsible for the safety and security of patrons, staff, collections, equipment, and facilities during evening and weekend hours.
- While based in College Library, the security officer conducts routine security rounds in Steenbock and Memorial Libraries and assists other libraries across campus as needed.
- Engages in effective communication with patrons and staff about library use, closing the library, and compliance of the Library Code of Conduct.
- Responds to and accurately documents security and emergency situations.
- Regularly engages in professional development and training opportunities related to conflict resolution, de-escalation, safety, medical, and/or campus and specific library climates and environments.
- Secures, organizes, and manages the key cabinet at College Library.
- Organizes and maintains policies, procedures, and tasks related to lost and found items.
