Job Summary:

The International Division, the central convener and leader for campus-wide international programming and engagement at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, is seeking an Associate Dean for High-Impact Practices to provide administrative, operational, and strategic leadership for our high-impact educational efforts. The Associate Dean for High-Impact Practices (HIPs) will lead the development, cultivation, and implementation of a divisional framework that enhances student experiences through high-impact educational practice programs and initiatives including but not limited to: International Academic Programs, International Internship Programs, King Morgridge Scholarship Program, Fulbright Program.

This position reports to the Vice Provost and Dean of the International Division.

About the International Division:

The International Division leads campus efforts to cultivate international scholarship and engagement, promote global awareness, and prepare students for a diverse and interconnected world. We accomplish this by supporting international academics, internships, research, and partnerships on campus and abroad. The division is a resource for campus, the city of Madison, and the state reinforcing the university's position as a top global institution and ensuring students are prepared to engage an increasingly diverse and interconnected world.

The International Division comprises seven pillar units: the Institute for Regional and International Studies, International Academic Programs, International Faculty and Staff Services, the International Internship Program, the International Projects Office, International Student Services, and the Language Program Office.

1. High-Impact Programs (HIP) Oversight
a. Provide oversight to the International Division HIPs portfolio including establishing strategic direction, setting priorities that align with the strategic directives of the Dean, overseeing program directors, coordinators and curricula, monitoring compliance with laws/regulations, university policies and procedures, and relevant contractual obligations
b. Work with program directors to Define programmatic goals and ensure their proper implementation, autonomously and in collaboration with appropriate stakeholders, within broadly defined strategic goals for the International Division and the University of Wisconsin-Madison
c. Supervise program directors to ensure staff are organized for to maximize organizational efficiency and programmatic outcomes
d. Work with program directors to allocate staff and financial resources based on defined programmatic and growth trajectory
e. Oversee ongoing program assessment and help program directors identify opportunities for improvement by guiding the establishment of annual goals, ensuring progress towards goals, articulating challenges, and reporting on annual outcomes and achievements for programs/services
f. Support the International Division Dean in setting and fulfilling program donor development goals

2. Assume additional duties as assigned by the Dean and Division Senior Leadership team, including but not limited to:
a. Serve on various university review committees and task forces with a wide range of constituencies
b. Advise and collaborate with ID Leadership on critical issues and special projects and represent the functional area of supervision and/or Dean at appropriate meetings and events with internal and external stakeholders
c. Serve on and/or lead various program and/or university committees, as needed, on HIP issues
d. Build consensus and develop collegial, collaborative working relationships with a broad range of stakeholders, partner with administrative and academic departments to support initiatives, and gather input from key stakeholders to support recommendations
e. Collaborate and advise the International Division and other campus stakeholders on effective strategies and implementation of HIPs

3. Personnel Management & Supervision
Supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 FTE or equivalent employees

Responsibilities:

Serves as a senior academic officer within a school or college. Plans, directs, and provides administrative, operational, and strategic leadership for one or more recognized academic programs or departments in the assigned school or college. Represents the academic program regarding strategic planning, curriculum development, faculty recruitment and retention; and ensures the integration and coordination of academic programs and initiatives.
  • 30% Provides leadership for one or more academic programs by establishing strategic direction and setting priorities that align with the academic directives of the Dean, and ensures units effectively carry out duties in a way that best supports the university's initiatives, strategic direction, and academic mission; provides direct supervision of department/program leadership and monitors compliance with laws, regulations, university policies and procedures, and relevant contractual obligations
  • 20% Advises and collaborates with the Dean, Assistant Deans, and/or Office of the Provost on critical issues, represents the functional area of supervision at appropriate meetings and events as requested; and serves on and/or leads various program and/or university committees as directed to address issues
  • 10% Directs on-going assessment and continuous improvement of academic programs and services by guiding the establishment of annual goals, ensuring progress towards goals is met, articulating challenges, and reporting on annual outcomes and achievements for programs/services
  • 5% Ensures initiatives are effectively using program assessment and data analysis to improve initiatives and strategies, identifies opportunities for improvement, and makes recommendations to the Dean for approval
  • 10% Leads special initiatives and/or academic programs that require senior leadership attention with respect to program design, planning, coordination, and interaction with internal and external stakeholders
  • 10% Builds consensus and develops collegial, collaborative working relationships with a broad range of stakeholders, partners with administrative and academic departments to support initiatives, and gathers input from key stakeholders to support recommendations
  • 10% May exercise supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 FTE or equivalent employees
  • 5% Serves on various university review committees, working with a wide range of constituencies including the Faculty Senate, Deans and Associate Deans, General Counsel, and University Leadership

Education:

Required
Master's Degree
M.A. degree required; PhD strongly preferred.

Qualifications:

Minimum of five years' experience in leading, developing and/or facilitating international engagement, enhancement, opportunity, and/or academic support programs for diverse populations in higher education, public K-12 education, and/or the government or non-profit sectors
Demonstrated commitment to creating equitable and inclusive working and learning environments
Demonstrated excellence in interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
Demonstrated excellence in administrative and organizational skills
Demonstrated ability to lead a team under tight timelines and changing priorities
Demonstrated excellence in attention to detail
Demonstrated excellence in judgment and decision-making
Demonstrated high integrity, diplomacy, and tact

Demonstrated competency in budget management

Preferred:
Terminal degree, such as a Ph.D. or Ed.D.
Experience living/working abroad or other relevant international experience.
Experience in donor relations
Supervisory experience
Experience in higher education administration
A strong record of accomplishment in implementing new programs and new programmatic strategies, with robust outcomes (in quality, academic outcomes, growth, and revenue)
Experience effectively managing, prioritizing, and executing multiple projects concurrently
Employing a high standard of excellence while providing and maintaining an excellent level of customer service, professionalism, and high team morale in a fast-paced working and learning environment
