Position Summary

The SDSU-Imperial Valley Library supports the library, research, and curriculum needs of students, faculty, and staff at the SDSU-IV campus. The Library is further supported by the San Diego State University Campus Library with over one million volumes, an online catalog, more than 100 article and full-text research databases, book sharing with San Diego and California State University libraries, as well as book and article access via Interlibrary Loan. In addition, the Library houses computers with Internet and word processing capabilities, printers, media collection and services, Border Studies Collection and Learning Center, meeting rooms for the campus community.

The Library is open 62 hours a week during the regular semester. The staff includes one faculty member and two library services specialists, with the addition of work study students as needed.

Library Services Specialist staff circulation desk and/or oversee daily circulation operations; check library materials in and out using library systems; update and maintain patron database; prepare circulation reports; follow-up on overdue materials and collect fines; handle lost and damaged materials; assist patrons in finding materials and with questions related to circulation policies and procedures; and resolve patron problems related to circulation functions. In addition to other library duties, Library Services Specialist may perform such administrative functions as serving as the unit(s) accounting and/or budget coordinator; serving as a library applications/systems specialist; assisting in preparing library publications; coordinating library building services and security; coordinating library supplies and maintaining equipment and furniture inventories.

This is a part-time (80%), benefits eligible, temporary position anticipated to end on or before June 30, 2023. This position is designated non-exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation..

Education and Experience

Library Service Specialists at this level perform clearly defined tasks, typically within one or two core functions. Work requires knowledge of specific procedures and methods for assigned tasks. Specialists typically follow set procedures and instructions and may oversee student workers performing similar or related work within the library unit.

These qualifications for entry to Position Skill Level I normally would be obtained through the completion of a high school education or equivalent certification plus two to three years of related library and/or clerical experience or an equivalent combination of experience and education.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Thorough knowledge of Library of Congress, Dewey Decimal and Government Printing Office classification systems
  • Basic book care preservation
  • Knowledge of collection management and organization
  • Knowledge of basic collection valuation
  • Knowledge of basic equipment repair
  • Ability to prioritize and use its independent judgment in organizing workflow
  • Ability to work independently as well as with others
  • Self-initiative

Compensation and Benefits

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources. Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $2,800 per month.

CSU Classification Salary Range (80%): $2,529 - $4,231 per month.

SDSU Vaccine Policy

In accordance with the California State University system wide policy, students, faculty, and staff must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or provide a valid medical or religious exemption in order to access campus. Individuals are considered fully vaccinated for five months after their final dose of a two-dose COVID-19 vaccine or for two months after receiving the only dose of a single-dose vaccine. Afterward a COVID-19 booster is required to continue to be considered fully vaccinated.

The individual hired into this role will be required to submit their completed vaccination documentation to the university's secure online health portal prior to beginning work. Individuals with an approved medical or religious exemption on file with the university will be required to participate in SDSU's COVID-19 testing program.
