Position Summary

The Office of the Associate Vice President for International Affairs is responsible for the coordination and development of international programs and services at San Diego State University including, but not limited to, faculty engagement, international research, international curriculum, international student services, study abroad, assessment, transborder programs, the SDSU Passport Office, and international alumni relations and development. The Associate Vice President for International Affairs reports to the Provost and Senior Vice President and serves as one of the executive officers in the Division. The Associate Vice President is responsible for the direction and coordination of department programs/personnel as designated by the Provost.

International Affairs provides services that meet the diverse needs of the SDSU global community and offers programs which foster global perspectives and diplomacy, intercultural awareness and international goodwill. This unit serves as SDSU's central source of information and support services for faculty engagement, incoming students, outgoing students on study abroad programs, and passport services. International Affairs works with all areas of the university to identify and meet the unique needs of its constituencies and to provide opportunities for all members of the campus community to develop effective skills and perspectives for global citizenship and leadership.

Annual direct-service constituencies include; 1,700+ non-immigrant students; 15,000+ special event participants; 2,000+ study abroad participants; and 20,000+ Passport Office patrons. These areas are staffed by approximately 21 full time positions and 25 student assistants.

The Exchange Program Coordinator, supervised by the Global Education Office (GEO) Director, is directly responsible for advising inbound exchange students, as well as planning, developing, implementing and evaluating a full range of services and programs which meet the international objectives of the university and the special needs of students seeking or engaged in exchange programs.

This is a full-time (1.0 time-base) benefits-eligible, probationary position. This position is designated exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.

The individual hired into this role will work on-campus at SDSU in San Diego.

Education and Experience

Experience:
Possession of the required knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field; experience should give evidence of competence and indicate the potential for further growth. A master's degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience.

Education:
Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job-related field. Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities explained below may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous experience studying, living or working abroad
  • Foreign language skills with at least one language other than English
  • Working knowledge of issues related to international educational exchange and study abroad.
  • Demonstrated skills in: intercultural communications and cross-cultural relations; interpersonal communication skills, particularly related to advising students and interacting with faculty, administrative staff, and parents; plan, design and implement study abroad marketing plans to meet specified goals.
  • Strong skills in oral and written communications, critical thinking, problem solving, program planning, program evaluation and computer usage
  • Demonstrated ability to relate easily, effectively and equitably with students from diverse cultural backgrounds; collaborate with other staff in program design and production; and take direction as well as apply self-initiative.

Compensation and Benefits

Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $4,304 per month. Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources. CSU Classification Salary Range: $4,304 - $6,120 per month.

SDSU COVID-19 Vaccine Policy

In accordance with the California State University systemwide policy, students, faculty, and staff must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or provide a valid medical or religious exemption in order to access campus. Individuals are considered fully vaccinated for five months after their final dose of a two-dose COVID-19 vaccine or for two months after receiving the only dose of a single-dose vaccine. Afterward, a COVID-19 booster is required to continue to be considered fully vaccinated.

The individual hired into this role will be required to submit their completed vaccination documentation to the university's secure online health portal prior to beginning work. Individuals with an approved medical or religious exemption on file with the university will be required to participate in SDSU's COVID-19 testing program.
