Position Summary

The Department of Athletics, utilizing the services of over 150 employees, is responsible for the intercollegiate athletics program at San Diego State University. Currently, there are 18 sport programs, approximately 550 student-athletes, and 17 offices in the department. The offices include the following: The Aztec Club/Development, Administration, Athletic Medicine, Business Office, Compliance, External Corporate Sales, Equipment, Event Management/Facilities and Operations, Human Resources, Information Technology, Marketing, Media Relations, Strength and Conditioning, Student-Athlete Academic Support Services, Ticket Office, and Video.

This program coordinates the medical care of club and varsity sports teams. This includes in-season clinical examinations and rehabilitation; maintaining proper documentation and records; controlling bid, vendor, and supply inventory; providing educational and career guidance/supervision for student intern athletic trainers; and developing professional relationships with physicians, medical providers, physical therapists, and their respective administrations. Associated Students offers 22 men's and women's club sports programs including two full-time assistant athletic trainers.

Under the direction of the Associate Athletic Director of Athletic Medicine, the Assistant Athletic Trainer for Recreational Sports will assist in administering a sports medicine program for Recreational Sports and Athletics, working to prevent athletic injuries by evaluating the student-athlete's physical condition and establishing a proper conditioning program. When injuries do occur, the Assistant Athletic Trainer for Recreational Sports/Athletics serves as the first responder by recognizing and evaluating the injuries, and subsequently developing treatment and rehabilitation programs, incorporating the appropriate therapeutic modalities and use of rehabilitation and exercise equipment.

Full-time, temporary position anticipated to end on or before 6/30/2023 with the possibility of reappointment. This position is designated exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.

This position is physically located at the SDSU Main Campus in San Diego.

Education and Experience

Equivalent to bachelor's degree in athletic training, physical education, kinesiology or related field of study or combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities. Course work must include completion of the NATABOC curriculum requirements.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Sports-Medicine related area.
  • Proficiency with Biodex, SwimEx, and Alter-G.
  • Additional credentials of advance study in an athletic training related subject matter. Examples are functional evaluation/rehabilitation, instrumented or manual soft tissue mobilization, Kinesiotape, etc.
  • Experience as a certified athletic trainer in intercollegiate athletics; in particular, with football, club sports, and/or rugby.
  • Computer skills in inventory, budget, and insurance.
  • Ability to travel to away contests.

Licenses and or Certifications Required:

Certification by the National Athletic Trainers' Association Board of Certification. Must possess and maintain certification in CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and first aid. Must stay current with these certifications and submit proof to the Senior Associate Athletic Director of Athletic Medicine.

Compensation and Benefits

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources. Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $3,571 per month.

CSU Classification Salary Range: $3,440 - $6,892 per month.

SDSU Vaccine Policy

In accordance with the California State University systemwide policy, students, faculty, and staff must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or provide a valid medical or religious exemption in order to access campus. An individual is considered fully vaccinated two weeks after their second dose of a two-shot vaccine or two weeks after the first dose of a single-shot vaccine. Afterward a COVID-19 booster is required to continue to be considered fully vaccinated.

The individual hired into this role will be required to submit their completed vaccination documentation to the university's secure online health portal prior to beginning work. Individuals with an approved medical or religious exemption on file with the university will be required to participate in SDSU's COVID-19 testing program.
