Position Summary:

Actively manage on-site operations and ESL instructors at Johnson County Adult Education's (JCAE's) Center of Grace (CoG) location Supervise four levels of ESL instruction of approximately 10-12 instructors, 300 students and 10-15 classes per semester at COG. These classes typically meet Monday through Thursday from 9 am until noon and from 6 until 9 pm. Classes aim at helping students achieve English language and literacy skills in reading, writing, listening, and speaking, and include instruction in life skills, workplace skills, U.S. civics and citizenship skills, and digital literacy. The objective of the classes is to enable students to fully participate in our community, enter the workplace, improve workplace skills, and enter post-secondary education.

Provide direct instruction of JCAE ESL students, in at least 1 class per semester. Help develop and co-teach specialty classes for ESL students in high-demand fields such as health care and with community partners such as Workforce Partnership. Support initiatives with industries for at-work ESL classes and instruction.

Support recruitment and hiring of new ESL instructors at all locations. Train and mentor new instructors primarily at CoG, but also at other locations if/as needed. Conduct teacher observations and coaching with ESL lead instructor. Participate in student intake such as recruiting, testing and orientation. Substitute teach as needed to cover instructor absences at any ESL program location.

Work as part of the JCAE leadership team to optimize student outcomes and to drive efficient, effective program operations.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in education or related field

  • 3+ years' experience in teaching adult ESL learners in-person and on-line

  • 3+ years' experience teaching in a student-centered classroom setting

  • 3+ years' experience training and managing instructors

  • 2+ years' experience working in a grant-funded or non-profit environment and complying with state and federal mandates

  • Understanding of the challenges and needs of non-traditional adult learners including English language learners

  • Have cultural sensitivity to work collaboratively with adults with very limited English language skills

  • Have excellent leadership, collaboration, problem-solving, and decision-making skills and the ability to manage multiple concurrent tasks while maintaining focus on details

  • Possess strong project management skills

  • Must be diplomatic and able to maintain grace under pressure

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office

  • Proficient in using technology to enhance classroom learning

  • Must have a flexible schedule with the ability to work evenings and an occasional Saturdays as needed

  • Needs to show demonstrated ability to work independently and with a team

Preferred Qualifications:
  • TESOL certificate from an accredited university or Master's degree in teaching English as a Second Language

  • Proficient in Google Classroom and related Google applications

Position Details: Job duties include but are not limited to:
  • INSTRUCT ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE FOR ADULT LEARNERS - Teach at least one class per semester of adult learners in ESL or integrated career technical training classes. Instruct short-term specialty classes such as digital literacy and civics. Provide classroom instruction as a substitute for absent instructors. a. Students are enrolled, engaged, and progress. b. Measurable student outcomes are at or above historical program and State averages. c. Reporting requirements are met with quality and timeliness. d. New instructors and instructors needing improvement in classroom instruction techniques can observe a high-performing instructor in the classroom. e. All applicable federal, state, JCCC, and JCAE policies and regulations are met with quality and timeliness. f. Periodic absences of ESL teachers are covered with quality and timeliness. Primary instructors are updated on events and activities during their absence. g. Confidentiality of information regarding students, instructor performance, and program attributes is maintained.
  • PARTICIPATE IN RECRUITING/HIRING, TRAINING/MENTORING NEW INSTRUCTORS, OBSERVING CLASSROOM TEACHER PERFORMANCE, AND COACHING TEACHERS TO IMPROVE PERFORMANCE Mentor and train teachers. Perform teacher observations and coach for improvement. Implement new curriculum, policies, and procedures for ESL classes and Integrated English Literacy and Civics Education (IELCE), per evolving state and federal regulations. a. New ESL instructors are trained effectively and on time and have a clear understanding of performance expectations, resources, and opportunities for professional development and growth. b. New instructors are observed within two months of the start of their class; written and oral feedback for reinforcement and improvement has been delivered within a week of the observation. c. Effective instruction is modeled for new instructors and to elevate performance of current instructors. d. Performance issues are addressed in a timely manner. e. JCCC Human Resources hiring and on-boarding policies and procedures are met. f. All applicable federal, state, JCCC, and JCAE policies and regulations are met with quality and timeliness.
  • SPECIAL PROJECTS - Complete special projects and/or reports required by JCCC or the Kansas Board of Regents. a. Special projects/reports are completed effectively and on time with no adverse impact on regular duties. The responsibilities described represent the primary responsibilities of the job. Other responsibilities may be assigned by the supervisor as warranted by business needs. The incumbent is expected to complete all assigned responsibilities.
  • SUPERVISE FOUR LEVELS OF ESL INSTRUCTION (APPROXIMATELY 10-12 INSTRUCTORS, 300 STUDENTS AND 15 CLASSES PER SEMESTER) AT CENTER OF GRACE, ONE OF TWO JCAE ESL STUDY CENTERS. COORDINATE ACTIVITIES AND CLASSES WITH CENTER OF GRACE, JCAE AND JCCC. - Serve as site supervisor/manager for JCAE ESL programs at Center of Grace, liaison with Center of Grace staff, act as a representative of JCCC at Center of Grace, and serve as a member of JCAE's extended leadership team. Responsibilities include focus on collective and individual needs of students enrolled at JCAE at Center of Grace as well as needs of staff. a. Instruction at Center of Grace meets program standards and requirements. b. Student progress and outcomes meet or exceed historical averages. c. Facilities and safety issues are addressed in a timely and effective manner, and appropriate JCCC departments are notified of issues to be addressed. d. Technology issues are addressed in a timely and effective manner, and appropriate JCCC personnel are informed of outstanding issues. e. Classrooms are properly staffed with teachers. f. Communications with instructors and staff are frequent and thorough to maintain high staff engagement and performance. g. Any incidents that occur are diffused and reported to the appropriate person(s) or department(s). Examples of incidents may include: a student may experience a medical emergency; a case of domestic violence may be reported; or a student may require childcare or transportation to continue attending classes. h. The Center has appropriate equipment, materials, and supplies to function efficiently.
