Help students improve their writing skills and become more independent writers. Assist in improving the Academic Center for Excellence and attaining its goals.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Attend all lectures for the designated course. Take lecture
notes and become familiar with course content to be assessed on
quizzes and exams.
- Actively schedule students (1:1 and in groups) to sign up for
SI sessions throughout the semester to go over assignments and
missing work and to prepare for exams.
- Meet with the instructor regularly to ascertain students'
progress and keep the instructor informed of tutorial
sessions.
- Model critical thinking skills relevant to the content, review
notes, cover and reinforce course expectations, and address
students' questions.
- Plan SI sessions using a wide variety of interactive learning
strategies (without re-teaching, lecturing or completing students'
assignments for them).
- Prepare handouts, informal quizzes, and other learning aids
that enhance students' learning or that are directed by the
instructor.
- Model generalizable and effective learning skills and studying
strategies for students to emulate in the present and the
future.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.

Additional Responsibilities
- Perform activities related to Supplemental Instruction (SI) in
assigned classes. Create student profiles for the course and
identify at-risk cases in consultation with the instructor. Collect
attendance and learning outcome data for measurable improvement of
SI sessions. Create promotional and other related materials for SI.
Communicate and meet regularly with SI course faculty and Academic
Center for Excellence administrators. Assist in preparing SI course
reports and summaries. Lead SI training as assigned by your SI
supervisor. Attend relevant professional development workshops
offered by the Academic Center of Excellence. Develop and maintain
a professional relationship with SI course instructors. Maintain
confidential records
- Tutor undergraduate and graduate students in academic subjects
in either face-to-face (individual or small group) sessions or
through online sessions. Help students prepare for the TSI,
Accuplacer/WritePlacer, and other exams. Develop, update, and
facilitate workshops, presentations, writing/peer review sessions,
and orientations. Check and respond to email
communication
- Complete on-going tutor and SI training. Attend staff meetings
and training sessions throughout the year.
- Assist with special activities and projects, such as university
events, in-house publications, etc.
- Assist with office duties such as making copies,
delivering/picking up correspondence, maintaining office
neat/clean/organized, etc.
Minimum Requirements
- Education - Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited
institution.
- Experience - Two years of related experience.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be
considered.
Preferred Education and Experience
- Experience as a tutor in writing or other content areas and/or
experience as a supplemental instruction leader.
- Knowledge of current tutoring and supplemental instruction
techniques and strategies.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of:
- Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
Skills in:
- Strong academic record in writing and/or other content
areas.
Ability to:
- Communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
- Think critically and problem solve.
- Interact effectively, professionally, and tactfully with
students, faculty, and other University personnel.
- Motivate students.

Salary: $12.50/hourly
