Job Description Summary
The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania is seeking an inaugural Chief Information Security Officer (CISO). The CISO will lead Wharton Computing's Information Security team tasked with protecting the digital assets of the world's largest business school and well-known brand. This leadership position will be responsible for developing Wharton's infosec strategy, leading projects to improve our security and privacy posture, and collaborating with leaders and constituents across the University to create a secure yet usable environment for our world class faculty, students, staff, and alumni.
Job Description
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Lead Wharton Computing's Information Security Team. The team is currently staffed with an existing Information Security Officer and Senior IT Security Analyst.
- Provide guidance and counsel to IT leaders and key school and university constituents, working closely with senior administration, academic leaders, and the campus community in defining objectives for information security all while building relationships, goodwill and ensuring the business of the school is successful.
- Perform as the school's leader and subject matter expert on all security and privacy related matters. Understand the implications on school business of FERPA, HIPPA, GDPR, as well as local, state, national, and international requirements. Escalate as needed.
- Propose, lead, and implement technical, operational, and training projects to improve the school's security posture.
- Collaborate with school and university colleagues on all Infosec matters. Build strong working relationships with partners in IT, Security, Privacy, Audit & Compliance, Public Safety, OGC, and other administrative units.
- Enable successful academic research by working with faculty, students, and staff on technical controls, data use agreements, and the security and privacy of complex and unique research data.
- Work with various constituents to implement appropriate authentication, authorization, and accessibility of various classifications of data.
- Lead school-level efforts for internal and external audits, Security & Privacy Impact Assessments (SPIA), Business Impact Assessments (BIA), training exercises, and scenarios.
- Provide leadership during security incidents. Escalate to subject matter experts, collaborate with the University level Office of Information Security, as well as school and university leadership as appropriate.
- Provide regular reports to leadership on incidents, risks, opportunities, and progress improvements.
- Provide input on school and university policies. Lead and/or serve on committees and project teams as necessary.
- Design and provide education and training programs on security policies and practices to a range of technical and non-technical constituents.
- Make recommendations for investments in new security and privacy initiatives.
Qualifications:
- Wharton's first CISO should have a strong strategic grasp of information security at both institutional and operational levels; the capacity to articulate a vision for information security that engages all constituents is comfortable working at a complex organization with significant decentralization, all while enabling Wharton's ongoing pursuit of excellence and innovation in its academic and research fields.
- Possess strong communication and collaboration skills to build support for security-related initiatives and objectives.
Specifically, candidates should demonstrate:
- At least 7 years of current experience directly related to the responsibilities of the role demonstrating progressing leadership experience. Experience in higher education or a research environment is strongly preferred.
- Broad knowledge of computer security issues, requirements, and trends.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, plus the ability to achieve goals through influence, collaboration, and cooperation.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with an array of constituencies in a community that is both demographically and technologically diverse.
- Skill in developing policy and procedure in a complex, decentralized, and academic-oriented environment that maintains a department-based model of resource allocation and deployment.
- The CISO will be expected to work normal business hours. The Wharton School, The University of Pennsylvania, and Wharton Computing are currently operating in a flexible hybrid work environment. The CISO will be required to be on call, carry a school-provided cell phone, and occasionally be available to respond to critical events that may occur during non-normal business hours.
- The ability to establish, implement, maintain, and modify computer and data security guidelines and procedures to achieve compliance objectives balanced with the principles of academic freedom that remain core to a world-class university.
- The ability to evaluate and implement security software and hardware products, and oversee their installation and implementation.
- Experience evaluating and providing guidance on the information-security elements of software and hardware acquisitions, IT services, cloud-based solutions, mobility, and other present and emerging dimensions of IT solutions and services in a complex environment.
- Experience securing IT services and solutions hosted in a primarily cloud-based infrastructure.
- Have a familiarity with digital forensics and be able to interpret findings for practical use by IT experts, law enforcement, legal counsel, and senior management as applicable.
- Proven personal integrity and high standards of personal and professional conduct.
- A Graduate degree is strongly preferred in computer science or related field. Equivalent experience and relevant professional credentials will be considered.
