Position Summary:
The Data Engineer reports to the Director of IT Project Management and Strategic Initiatives and partners with Institutional Effectiveness and campus data stewards to extract, transform, and deliver institutional data. This position will provide support for the data warehouse (Edify).Will consider remote work options.

Specific Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with members of the data governance council
  • Consult with data leaders in functional areas on needs
  • Curate and maintain analytics database
  • Develop and maintain solutions to capture, process, and report on data in university enterprise wide systems
  • Optimize warehouse and analytic databases
  • Define, create, and maintain point-in-time snapshop reporting workflows
  • Improve analytics performance by conducting tests, troubleshooting and optimizing transformations
  • Integrate additional data elements into warehouse and reporting environments
  • Develop, test, and maintain innovative solutions for moving data into and through our data warehouse, Edify.
  • Monitoring and maintenance of existing data acquisition jobs.
  • Follow established software development methods in the areas of source code control, testing, DevOps, and release management, recommending improvements where appropriate.
  • Communicate work progress and concerns to management and peers.
  • Professional development skills with a focus on expertise in data engineering as a profession, advancements in technology and business intelligence practices, and sharing that knowledge and expertise within our team.
  • Coordinate with the team to identify risks, issues, requirements, and design solutions for project-level activity on a regular basis.
  • Develop relationships with peers across the University to foster cooperation between teams, exchange information, and support data-related efforts.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Demonstrated knowledge in SQL Server and Postgres syntax or equivalent experience with data-driven programming (e.g., R, Python, D3)
  • Building and maintaining ETL operations between multiple sources on varying platforms or equivalent data transformation and curation experience.
  • Experience processing large data sets.
  • History of preparing data for prescriptive and predictive modeling.
  • Proactively identifying patterns and trends in big data.
  • Data governance champion - can articulate the people and process parts of data and not just the technical specifications
  • High level of analytical and creative skills
  • Demonstrable data analysis, preparation, and reporting skills
  • Familiarity with APIs to retrieve and send data.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work with diverse end-users (e.g., Registrar, Advancement, Student Life)
  • Well-organized, independent, and ready to work with minimal supervision.
  • Proven troubleshooting skills.

    Physical Demand Position requires the ability to stand or sit for extended periods of time. Position requires the ability to move about the campus. Position requires the ability to talk and to hear instruction. Position requires occasional manual dexterity and the ability to use fingers, hands, and arms to feel, handle, and reach. Working conditions are indoor.

    Required Qualifications:
    Education
    A bachelor’s degree required in an IT related discipline.



    Preferred Qualifications:
    Experience
    Two years of relevant experience in IT or the equivalent combination of higher education and IT experience.
