Job Description Summary
Unpacking the Past (UtP) is a free multi-point program offered to 6th and 7th grade classes in Philadelphia Title I schools. The program includes an in-class lesson, a field trip with paid bus, and extension lessons - all designed to explore what connects humans across time, place, and culture. The Part-time Museum Educator (PTME) works four days per week for 6-7 hours per day (an average of 25 hours per week). During the school year, The PTME will spend most days teaching classes who are participating in the UtP program - either in classrooms across the city or at the Penn Museum. All lessons are designed to relate to school curriculum on ancient cultures and to show connections between the ancient and modern world. The PTME may assist with ongoing UtP program design, including program evaluation and content research.

In the summer months (June, July, August), the Part-time Museum Educator will support summer camp operations at the Museum. The Part-time Museum Educator will lead gallery lessons and workshops for Penn Museum Anthropology Camp, a day camp for children ages 6-13. The Part-Time Museum educator may assist with gallery lesson and workshop planning for summer camp. There may be an opportunity to shift working schedules in summer months.

Throughout the year, the Part-Time Museum Educator will assist with Family Programs at the museum as their schedule allows. These Family Programs may include Winter Break programming and other special week-day programming. Comp time will be awarded in these cases.

Job Description

Duties:

Do you have a passion for education and learning? Do you love working with middle school students? Are you a natural at engaging groups and getting kids to imagine and explore? If so, we hope you will apply to work as a Part-time Museum Educator in the Penn Museum's Unpacking the Past program. Unpacking the Past (UtP) is a free multi-point program offered to 6th and 7th grade classes in Philadelphia Title I schools. The program reaches approximately 6,000 students in about 100 schools and includes an in-class lesson, a field trip with paid bus, and extension lessons - all designed to explore what connects humans across time, place, and culture. Responsibilities include:

  • Work ~25 hours/week (mostly between hours of 8:30 AM and 3:00 PM, M-Th, or T-F)
  • Learn to teach existing lessons
  • Drive Museum vehicles to schools throughout the city to teach in-class lessons
  • Facilitate gallery tours and hands-on workshops at the Museum
  • Support program evaluation by administering and collecting surveys from participants
  • Assist with providing other programs for non-UtP K12 groups onsite, as needed
  • Support summer camp operations in June, July, and August. (lead gallery lessons and workshops for children ages 6-13)
  • Other duties, as assigned


Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in humanities, education, museum studies, cultural studies, or related field, or HS degree with demonstrated teaching experience working with middle school students. 1-2 years experience teaching and/or programming, in-person and/or virtually, within K-8 classroom, or in museum or other informal learning environments or equivalent combination of education and experience is required. Must be able to lift 25 lbs. to bring materials offsite to classrooms. Must be self-motivated, organized, and goal oriented. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Must have valid Driver's license, and be willing to drive to offsite locations; car to be provided. Some weekend and holiday work are required. Ability to manage students in a classroom setting. Preferred:
  • Bilingual in Spanish, Mandarin, or Arabic a plus
  • Strong connections to diverse communities in Philadelphia a plus
